Default who is greatest footballer ever...and why?

just thought id move the above to a home of its own to see what the opinions are.

i must admit i change my mind every time the question comes up. at the minute im split between maradona/pele/marco van basten.

maradona could take a whole team on on his own-ref: england 1986!!

pele-well what more can be said bout him?

van basten-think he may have been an all time great goalscorer it injury didnt finish him early.

    Default No argument

    It's Pele.

I have never seen any footballer interviewed who when asked who was the greatest/most skillfill player of all time answer anything other than Pele.

The times I've heard Pple like Giggs ask to comment on Beckham, Beckenbauer to comment on Maradonna, Geaorge Best to comment on Ronaldo - the answer is always the same i.e he's good but he's not Pele....

I even saw an interview with Maradonna once just after he held up the world cup (we was robbed) asking him if he was the greatest footballer of all time he said.. I am the best in the world - I'm almost as good as Pele was...

Maradonna was a great footballer... but he was so good with his hands he could have been a much better Basketball player
See me playing $10/$20NL like it was play money

I would say Pele, for no other reason than if you say his name most Americans even know who he is or have a general idea.

how about who is the best Italian of all time? German? Spaniard? Frenchmen? I think these would bring up better discussions. I also always like the, who is your favorite player of all time?

Yep, it has to be Pele. However, this discussion has spawned me to read my Encyclopedia of Soccer again. I'll have to go find it. The book has every major soccer event from 1930 on, and has detailed history of the game, including the respective histories of each national team or club.

my favoutite player changes with the wind - at the moment im kinda caught between roy keane and eric cantona. (yes im a manu fan!)

roy keane cos i dont think there is any other man alive who has as much drive and determination and leadership as he has.

cantona cos quite simply he is (was) the king
