Beckham is going to raise the consciousness of the game BIG TIME here in the States. (I've played for over 25 years here in Colorado so I'll try to control my passion for the game here on a poker forum.)
I can see some people already on this post that would normally not have a clue about the game at least knowing who the guy is...which is a big win! The game in the U.S. WILL grow even better because of Beckham coming here. Soccer is already the #1 youth sport in the country...so as those kids are adults...it will raise the rank. (Unless they all start playing too much poker and we all become Johnny Chan's...because I know Hold 'Em is HUGE in middle school and above.)

i equate beckham coming to the galaxy as the same when pele came to the cosmos. it brought attention to u.s. soccer for a few years then petered out. the cosmos acquired the players to surround their star. they won every other championship since. people got bored watching the superstars clobber the small town teams year after year. the league grew stagnant. i'm just hoping that doesn't happen this time around.
i believe soccer in the u.s. has been growing due to schools incorporating it into their regiment of acceptable sports for the past 20-30 years. plus the u.s. hosting the world cup in 94' helped immensely with the forming of mls. the popularity of the game has been growing ever since.

Honestly... I don't think the US is ready for a big soccer movement yet. I think this deal was a wrong move.

The only reason Beckham is going to play in the US is that no one wanted him in Europe - at least until the Spaniards woke up and then it was too late.
Moral? only players who are done/not wanted anymore/ are shipped to MLS...
