I know we have some people who wear baseball pants quite a bit on this forum. I was wondering what people outside of Chicago think of Ozzie Guillen, the 6th grade dropout, foul mouthed, players' manager of White Sox. Personally, I love the guy even though I hate the Sox with a passion, but I hear a lot of things on ESPN that I think are misconceptions. It just makes me wonder.

Not sure what you mean about hearing things on ESPN that are misconceptions.
But as a whole, I like Ozzie. I like most any athlete or person directly involved in sports that says things in interviews besides "We just have to take it one game at a time, not get too far ahead of ourselves, play our game, and execute."
This list includes Jeremy Roenick prior to a couple years ago when he became a caricature of himself, Brett Hull, Joey Porter, Shaq, and that's about it.
There have been a couple times I have thought he said some stuff that was really uncalled for, but the good outweighs the bad.
I think his personality overshadows that he is a pretty damn good manager, as well. Particularly good at handling a pitching staff. Some of the small ball crap on offense does more harm than good.

I tend to appreciate that coaches/managers that are heavily involved with their players as Guillen appears to be. I don't know much about the guy as following of baseball has declined in recent years, but I like what I've seen. I also agree with JTE as far as the interviews go. I want the athletes to give knowledgeable, but entertaining interviews. Otherwise, I'd rather them not give the interviews and take the extra practice time.

They don't play small ball. They hit 200 HR last year and added more power with Thome. They played as much small ball as any team that wins the World Series. That's just ESPN taking advantage of the fact that people believe anything they say like "Tim Duncan is the best PF of all time" or "Larry Brown is the best coach of all time." If all your information comes from ESPN, you'd think Curt Schilling's been dominant his whole career. They don't inform people to the news. They create characters in a drama and overdramatize real people. They're the MTV of sports.

Last season Ozzie was doing alot of bunting and hit and runs and all that. ESPN did attach themselves to that and the Baseball Tonight shitheads went on about how they "play the game the right way," never bothering to mention that they had the largest percentage of runs scored by home runs of any team. Ozzie did run alot of small ball plays and the team had a good offense, but small ball was not the cause of it, and they could have been even better if Ozzie hadn't given away some unnecessary outs.

The team results were great, but the topic is Ozzie Guillen, and I think that last season he tried to get too cute on offense at times. I think he may have figured out at some point that the team's strength on offense was it's power, because in Sox games I've seen this year, I can't recall any of that. Adding Thome probably makes it so obviously stupid to screw around with that stuff that they don't do it.
In 2004, the team scored 865 runs and allowed 831.
In 2005, they only scored 741 and cut their runs allowed to 645.
It wasn't a booming offense that got them a championship, it was a 5 deep rotation and a strong pen.

How to win a World Series
1) 2 superstar pitchers + 2 good pitchers
2) 2 fearsome hitters in your lineup + another home run threat
3) A bunch of other players who make contact, can bunt, and do the little things
4) A solid defense
5) A manager who doesn't LOSE any games (Ozzie fits this bill with Joe Torre being the absolute best. Let your players win the game, the manager just needs to put them in a position to win)
The White Sox had this last year, the Red Sox the year before. You win with pitching and defense and enough offense to get you by. Give me the Red Sox post all-star break 04 and you'll win a World Series every other year, Red Sox 05 will never win a World Series, Red Sox 06 are close but need another arm in the rotation.
BTW, The White Sox have all of the above again this yearRead my musings on poker and life at Online Poker Examiner, Poker Examiner, PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

Ugh, Torre's only skill is staying out of the way and not stirring up any more drama around that team there already is. As a tactician on the field, the guy is an abomination. He refuses to use Rivera in a non-save situation. If it's a tie game in the ninth or tenth inning, he'll throw Scott Proctor or Sturtze or anyone besides Rivera out there and let them lose the game.
He trotted Williams out in center WAY too much last season and put Womack in left field so he could get a .220 average out of a power position.
He definitely loses games for that team.
