    Default Good call or bad call?

    I was eliminated by calling an all-in that I am not sure if it was +EV or not.

    This is about 2/3rds the way through the field, not at the money yet.

    blinds are 100/200.

    Hero is UTG with (AJos)
    Hero min raises 400
    UTG +1 calls 400
    4 folds
    LP raises all-in for 6K
    folds back to me. I started the hand with 3300 in chips. I now have 2900 to call pot has 4K. The range of hands that I have him on is
    any pair 5-5's and up or any Ace 8-up (saw him shove with no money in pot earlier with 5's).

    How do I calculate if this was a good call or bad call?

    The equity you need to breakeven with a call is [Amount to Call/Total Pot]

    400(you)+400(utg)+3300(His bet for your effective stack size) + 300(SB+BB) = Pot of 4400 (you say 4k though...)
    2900/(4400+2900)
    2900/7300

    39.7% Needed equity

    Using pokerstove we calculate your equity against his range

    equity win tie pots won pots tied
    Hand 0: 44.441% 43.53% 00.92% 590266140 12417462.00 { AJo }
    Hand 1: 55.559% 54.64% 00.92% 741043704 12417462.00 { 55+, A8s, A8o }

    Using your info this is a +ev call

    (Note this only figures out chip ev, things get a little different close to the money and ICM comes into play.)

    Try using this:

    Poker Outs

    Little spread sheet I wrote up a few years, perfect for the situation your in now.

    This will be an additon to Pokerstove, as you can assign % chances of him holding individual hands. As in hes twice as likely to have pushed with a pair rather than a medium ace.

    Does a call become better or worse when it's close to the money? Either then the hand range loosens because nobody wants to call and be eliminated or his hand range shrinks because nobody wants to shove with anything but nuts?

    Depends. Both.

    Depends on what his goal is.

    Just getting ITM is not enough for some. In order to make a deep run, you need a stack, and on the bubble is a fabulous place to build a stack, as everybody else goes meek trying to just cash.

    But if all your going for is ITM, then tight it is.

    The math is way too complicated in large feild tournaments to accurately calculate stack equity vs payouts. (Usually at best, a human can do it by hand with only 3 players left, anymore the math gets really tedious). So it all depends on what his intents are, and to be honest, theres no way to figure that out online, aside from finding his past data, or finding him on forums.
