$30 MTT
Very very early no reads.
Fairly dry flop, is it even worth cbetting here? What's our plan for turn/river if we call the flop raise like I did?

ugh.....i hate this spot so early in MTTs since its usually when i go busto against the donk who limped with T7o "cos it was cheap and sure its only 80 more to call this guys raise"

is there really any way we're getting away from this here at all? and if we're not getting away from it, we have to push his turn bet...right?
since i hate AK oop, im quite happy to check my bb here and take it as i see it...which doesnt help all that much here tbh.
Edit: im only seeing now that its a $30 MTT so may be not be a complete and utter donk limping but at the same time, id struggle to get away from itFor the best rakeback rates, greatest choice of poker rooms, more promotions, tournaments and bigger $$$ freerolls than any other rakeback affiliate, visit RakeTheRake, one of the largest and most reputable poker rakeback affiliates in the world.

Slowplaying pf I dislike since the SB completed, otherwise I think it would be a good idea.
Suppose we scoped him, how would that change our range? If he's a shark, it's more weighted towards air/draw/big hand, if he's a fish he's raising KQ for value. Not an easy spot even with that kinda information.
I ended up c/c turn and river since he made it especially cheap on river, but didn't like it.
EDIT: Interesting, I scoped him now, seems to be breakeven over small sample.Last edited by OrionPro; 07-30-2008 at 02:05 PM.

Youv'e given quite a weak line here, in a $30 tourney I would have to shove this turn as played. I see sets getting turned over alot though.
In small MTTs I fold here, as dee says they call with ATC hoping to hit two pair, the ones I come up against rarely bluff raise or valuebet light. There were only two drawing hands he could have on the flop, one just made it there.

yeah I noticed that too. But the vast majority of players, from my experience, doesn't play draws that aggressively- in particular straight draws. Even if he had the NFD I don't expect him to raise the flop and bet the turn. It's very early, I could have a set of kings and just ship the flop or turn, who knows.

I have big problems with tilt when I blow 2/3 of my stack as I did here, he had K7 lol. Even though I had a healthy stack still measured by blind level, I always blow the rest due to tilt pretty soon afterwards. It's now 2nd time in a row someone makes a ridic pf call in one of the first hands I play and sucks out big time. But there must be a way to play overpairs or TPTK that gives me maximum value while at the same time minimizing losses. I guess bet bigger and fold flop right away to a raise might be best, unless I scope him & he's a huge fish, then maybe just shove?

It is tough when they also will call with bad top pairs. I like to be the one doing the raising against bad players. Hands like this are unfortuately reads alone at that level I guess.

This is why I overbet my big hands pre-flop in the early stages With 2000 stacks I probably make it 400 to go, that way if a donk wants to call he's only getting 5 to 1 implied odds, so in a situation like we have in the hand above, I don't feel bad going busto since he made a huge mistake. I don't like to give more than 5 to 1 implied odds in these spots. Go ahead setmine against my AA or KK!
raising to 100 gives him 20 to 1 implied odds, he technically could call with 27o if he wanted to.
Deopending on the field size I may just shove preflop. You'd be surprised how often your 400 or shove is called by KQ or AT or QJ.
Another reason is, it'll be hard for him to get off an AQ KQ type hand if we shove the flop on an A or K high flop.
Yet another reason is people will start to worry about you as a loose cannon. Very good image to have if you are actually a rock.
I know a lot of people disagree with my theory on these hands early on, but it has worked nicely for me in these smaller buy-in tourneys and STTs.Read my musings on poker and life at Online Poker Examiner, Poker Examiner, PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

I thought about shoving pre, but there's a disadvantage in that some players call with 22 and if you really have AK they're slightly ahead. It also works only once as players will trap after you did it once and limp big hands.
Raising big is fine too, except that I cant really estimate how often they call and when they do call, we miss most of the time and it's gonna be expensive to cbet.
