i will take maltz's hand ranges for my example - AA, KK, AK, AQ, QQ-TT may be considered re-raisable hands pre-flop.
these hand ranges i would consider to be a general guide.
your opponent isn't a general player but a specific player. The actual hands he is likely to be re-raising you with depends on his view of the game and his personal re-raising hands.
i am a specific player because i hardly ever re-raise somebody with ak, aq, or tt unless im making a move on a poor or loose player.
so the general re-raisable hands maltz provides would be very uneffective against me. because im almost always doing it with a hand that has you beat.
martys opponent overbets strong hands and has 3000 thousand in chips which marty thinks he has accumilated bye good solid play.
so this makes marty's opponent very likely to have you beat pre-flop.
so, if he re-raises your raise pre-flop you have to think he is doing it with strong holdings as a sign of respect to marty. in others words marty's opponent doesnt want to get fancy against a fellow apparent TAG because its to risky. or he knows there is no point in playing a hand slow against a donkey if he thinks marty is a donkey, which i doubt he thinks.
i would say martys opponent prefers not to slow play against anybody and he prefers to play premium hands.
his raise is more likely to mean aces or kings than the other possibilities based on marty's information provided.
by watching the players style and picking up reads on him, you can make an even better decision.
if you read HOH notice how he shows examples of his idea on using hand ranges the opponent is likely to raise with, against pot odd's he is getting. Notice how whenever he actually has the pot odds to make the call his opponent always seems to have the hand thats got him beat. this is because although its mathematically correct to call, the hand ranges he assigns the player are more general with respect to the specific hands the opponent see's fit to be involved with. so you need to understand your opponent to make the best decision
