Villain seems kind of tight/passive.
I wanted to control the size of the pot, take a free card for a chance at the nut flush and maybe even give my opponent a chance to bluff the river.

Bad time to check the turn?
I think I'm going to give up playing poker.........and take up repeatedly hitting myself in the nuts

I like the check. There was a hand posted a few days ago similar to this. I don't like betting the turn for fear of the check-raise which you will put you in a horrible spot with the nut flush draw. And as you say, a check will possibly induce bluffs on the river.
For Free Money, Rakeback and some 6x Ongame bonuses, I recommend PokerSource.
I recommend Cardrunners for superb poker coaching. It was honestly the single biggest improvement in my game signing up there! Sign-up fee might seem steep, but it pays itself back within weeks.

I dont think hes folding anything that beats you and I also dont think hes calling with anything you beat. Furthermore what really scares you on the river? Maybe the King which will fall approx 1 in 20 times (half that if he has 1)
You also get a chance to draw out for free against a slowplayed flush.
Therefore I don't bet.

Against this guy, there aren't many flushes that beat you, so I don't mind the check because he'll bet a King on the river after you check more times than he'll call the turn with one because everything he beat anything on the flop, he doesn't beat now (were he to have the King or a PP). Bad river and this player isn't capable of betting an Ace here that he would've called the flop with (A8/A9) or a PP and he isn't folding to a push.
