Default An odd 1st hand in MTT:

This was a $1 buy-in which may explain a lot. 1st hand of the tourney:

    - folds to MP
    - MP raises 4x BB
    - folds to SB
    - SB doubles the bet
    - BB smooth calls

    Flop comes down:

    - SB checks
    - BB bets 1/3 pot
    - MP raises all-in (approx. 2x pot)
    - SB calls
    - BB folds

    Board comes down:

MP wins with a set of Tens over SBs Jacks. BB swears up & down that he folded . He never did win a hand and was busted out pretty soon.

What I don't understand is: if he's going to pull a trap-play (not re-raising preflop) then why would he not call the all-ins he was seemingly trying to entice?

That's not odd. An odd first hand would be if everyone folded to the BB.

Looks like BB set a trap and then fell into it. Of course, I don't know why one would set a trap against a raise and a reraise. I think his only play here is push or fold (And if he folds, he needs to quit poker.) This is of course assuming he really did have KK.

At first I thought he was joking but he was adamant.

I don't meant the cards were odd, just how he played them was. Sneaky at first, and then suddenly ultra-tight?

I agree, with a raise & min-raise ahead of you it's time to push with the KK and cross your fingers you didn't run into AA.
