Ahh I getcha, it just seems odd when you look at it with just the cards. To be honest with the style I think he only says to fold if you are raised and haven't hit the hand... I'd probably have called this down too for the high card.
Basically with your raise PF, he should have reraised you with that hand. Then this mess could have been avoided
