Best FIVE Card Hand Wins
I'm assuming suits here are irrelevant:
No, in fact, your friend wins the hand. Remember that the best FIVE card hand wins (with any combination of the 5 community cards and two hole cards being valid).
You both have a pair of nines and the Queen kicker, but your friend has the higher second kicker, the Jack, which beats your 10.
YOU - 9 9 Q 10 6
FRIEND - 9 9 Q J 6
Your friend has the better hand and should win the pot.
NOTE: If you're still having trouble fully grasping the premise of the five card hand, you should make it your goal to master it because otherwise you might be reading boards, assessing your own hand strength and that of your opponents incorrectly. Be careful.
Hope this helps.

Ok, makes sense. I was under the assumption that we both had 9 with q kicker, so that was the hand. Didn't know the other cards mattered after that. Thanks for clearing that up for me
