Default Poker-would you have made this call post flop?

    Hi,

I just joined the forums and am a relative noob. I've been playing poker for about a year and only recently started studying it more in depth (harrington series and bill chen's book on the mathematics of poker).

I had this play today and want to know how I played and whether I could have played it better:

k, so i'm playing at the casino and lost $100 on an odd hand. I made a call which I think was correct- your thoughts? Open criticism is welcome:

So I am playing 1-2 nl, I am dealt pocket 77 and I call out of position. A few more call. There are 8 chips total in the pot. The main guy i've been playing has around 400 in chips and i have around 100 (bought in, minus a few bb).

The flop comes 7-5-8 (the 8 and 5 are spades). I've been playing tight and want to eliminate the possibility of a flush draw so I bet 20, giving odds of 20:28. Everyone folds except the other guy. He raises to 45. I figure he is holding a 6 and probably is playing A-6 or k-6 (he prolly isn't playing 6-9 or 6-4.). I move all in he calls for an additional 17 chips. I understand he is within his right to call because of the pot odds i gave him.

I turn over trips, he turns over A-6 (both of spades-i did not suspect this). On the turn he gets a 9 and gets the straight. Was my action the right call? I am slightly puzzled by this. He had 8 outs with either a 4 or a 9, plus 9 outs on the spades, minus the two outs for the 4 or 9, for a total of 15 outs.

So basically he had a 30% chance to win based on the turn and a 60% chance through the river, but he doesn't know that I am ahead.

However, I feel I was still the favorite passed the flop. Did I make the right decision? My instinct is telling me yes and the math would seem to agree, but I would really like to get alternate perspectives.

    Thanks a lot!

When you sit with $100 against $400 you pray for a set to hold. He's going to get you in with any outs at all. It's a flip.
