    Default Folding sets

    Hi All,

I've read some great threads here, many thanks to you all for that. My first post so here goes...

I've recently been trying to become a better cash player....I've done OK in tournaments so far, but mainly because I think I play pre-flop far better than post. Part of wanting to improve my cash game is linked to wanting to improve my post-flop play.

This hand was an example of a live game so no hand history I'm afarid...I will do my best to recall how the hand played out.

There were 8 players at the table, I was SB with around £90 (50p/£1), villian was in cut-off with a similar stack.

Action was folded round to villian, who raised to £3. Button folded, I looked down a 2-2, so I called hoping to flop a set. BB folded leaving me heads up.

Flop came down A,10,2. (cant remember suits, but there were no draws)

Often I would check this, but had a feeling villain had an ace, so I bet the pot (£7.50). He re-raised £25 making the pot £40. I had a think for a long time...knew he didnt have aces, and I thought the most likely hand was A 10, so I re-raised all-in (my remaining £80 or so).

Villain called and showed down 10-10. Turn and river didnt help.

If this was tournament play, I would probably play it the same way, but I'm wandering if the massive overbet when I went all in was an error.

In a nutshell, has anyone in cash games managed to fold a set for fear of an over set when there are no pairs or draws on the board?

You were most likely going broke no matter what it sucks. Its very hard to put your opponent on 10 10 or A A I think you made the right assumption with Ax 10 10 and A A are only two hands that beat you there. In cash I like to protect my money so I probably wouldn't have shoved, esp with bottom set.

In hindsight, if I min re-raised to say £40 (leaving me with just £40 behind) I might have been able to get away from the hand if he'd put me all in. His re-raise all in would have been strange play with A-10, and I might then have considered 10 10. I'm interested to see what people think about folding at that point...would I have gone to far with the hand to lay it down? (I would have invested £50, with £40 left only to then fold...that's tough!)

you don't "Get away" from a set there... period... that's just a standard hand that plays itself out to conclusion... ironically I was on the other side of that exact situation Saturday night for a $450 pot... Q-Q on a K-Q-8 board against a guy with 8-8... I bet aggressively and got it all in on the turn... it's unfortunate for the smaller set... but the set over set situation is so unlikely compared to the other hands your opponent may have that it is wrong to fold there... especially with two higher cards on the board... in both our cases it is far more likely that our opponents have either top pair, two pair, or a broadway draw... bet your hand for value, and if he has the higher set... move on to the next hand... it's like folding quads with a 4-card straight flush on board.... don't do it... (especially at casinos where you're actually hoping they have it... Foxwoods bad beat jackpot is like 350k right now )

    ditto to Av8tor post.
The whole reason to play 2-2 or any sm-mid pocket pair is to hopefully flop a set and get it all in. Set over set is more rare than AA vs KK but it happens - "That's Poker"! Mighty cruel sometimes but your flopped set will win more often than it loses in the long run - 80% according to the math types.

i'd fold pre if the cutoff is anywhere competant, unless the bb is a huge station.

the implied odds for set mining only exist if you're against a tight, and hence, strong range. against a wide (therefore weak) cutoff range you're not going to get paid from his air and with position it's easier for villian to play correctly vs you.

on this flop, i'd check my entire range to villain. if it wasn't ace high i have a balanced donking range with sets/draws/air.

you can't fold this hand live. if there's no flush draw on the flop he shouldn't have a raising range so he's likely bad. if there is a flush draw you want to get it in like you did.

your 3b shove is by no means an overbet.

fullring online i'm pretty sure there's some spots where i'd happily muck bottom set and would consider it fairly standard, but don't let me plant ideas in your head - don't go looking for reaosns to fold sets.
