$1/3 live game.
I'm currently stacked for roughly $500.
The player to my right is nursing his crumbs. He dwindles down to $36 before finding a hand to ship it in with. He's been talking about it for the last 10 hands until he finally shoves.
I'm on the button with 99. I know that he is impatient and 22-88 are certainly in his range to ship. Ax and 10J-KQ are also highly possible.
I decide to flat call with the button here, and then the BB who is also stacked decides to come along.
Flop comes Jd 8d 3h. BB checks to me very quickly. I get the feeling he's hoping for us to check it down at this point. My line of thinking is that with the J on board I may need to win a side pot to break even out of this affair. I make it $40 to go. BB calls.
Turn comes 4s. Total brick card. BB checks dark. I have him in the range of PP or 2 big diamonds. I KNOW he wants me to check it down after that dark check. I make it $65 to go. He calls again.
River comes Kd. This makes any hand that he was calling with. He checks to me a third time and I check back exposing my 99. He turns over AK off. The kid who was all in with his crumbs has JQ. Not only does AK river me for the side pot, but he rivers the all in kid for the main pot.
I get really mad now. I don't mind the flop call, but the turn call is just terrible. No pair, no draw, and no intention of betting even when he hits his card.
Where did I go wrong here? Should I be re-popping pre-flop to isolate with me and all in kid?
I know that I don't want to make a huge flop bet because if I run him off a draw or a worse hand, I still lose to all in kid.
Should I just check this hand down and see what happens?

i don't think you went wrong anywhere in this hand. If you re popped pre flop, the other guy may have folded the AK but it's unlikely. I probably would have bet the flop in your situation, and I would've bet the turn too. The guy in the hand with you made a real bad call on the turn and caught. I probably would have bet more on the turn, like 75 or 80, but that's about it.

i would have checked this one down with your hand. sure the BB might draw out on you, but there's a good enough chance that you're not winning anything anyway so there's less to gain in taking the him off his hand. only when i know i'm in really good shape do i bet into dry sidepots to protect my hand or for value. by betting here you mainly help the AI player and piss off the BB while not giving yourself much of an advantage. basically you and the BB can team up on the AI player by checking down, and even though it doesn't really suit you here, over time it pays to be on this team as often as possible. plus you seem to be a reg where you play so other players should hopefully note that you are willing to join in on a bit of light collusion against an AI player, so hopefully you'll get an opportunity to suck out on a shortstacker with 2 overs sometime in the future.
