What do you do if he raises? Or if he calls and pots the river?

I recommend Cardrunners for superb poker coaching. It was honestly the single biggest improvement in my game signing up there! Sign-up fee might seem steep, but it pays itself back within weeks.

Against an unknown we probably fold.

Sounds like you are playing scared for some reason. No need to lose value here from our hand.

So we turn AA and excellent showdown value into 23s?

Not at all. This is a simple value bet. I am saying if he calls turn and leads river we are probably beat, if he calls and checks river then we bet for value again. If he raises us all in on the turn I also call.

I'm starting to hope he had A8....

I think a big factor here is whether we think our opponent will bluff missed draws on the river

I like this line against good/agressive players.
Would bet against loose-passive players.
