Default To call or fold, that is the question

I get dealth Pocket Kings under the gun in my very first hand at a live 1-2 NL game. I'm UTG and don't know anything about any of the players (except one that I've played with before who didn't stay in the hand). I raise to $20 and the BB (to my right) calls. The flop brings 6/9/10 all hearts. Neither of my kings is heart. He checks to me (now, if he came out firing, I probably would have folded) and I bet $35 at the $40 pot and he moves all-in immediately. It's $90 for me to call and the pot is now $200. I'll scoop up a $290 pot if I win putting me at $345 and up $145 for the session on my first hand.
I thought about it for a while and I decided that he wouldn't have checked a low flush to me, and that he wouldn't have moved all-in with a high flush, so at best I figured he had one heart. I thought he put me on an ace/king that missed and saw my bet as a continuation bet. I thought it was possible he had top pair and thought he was ahead as well.
I ended up calling and he turns over K/J with one heart, so he has a gutshot straight draw and the flush draw. He hits his heart on the turn and it's over nice and quickly.
Now, knowing what cards he had, should I have folded?
He had 12 outs, so he was a slight underdog to win the hand. I talked with dealer about it and he said I probably should have folded and that I didn't have the correct odds to call that bet. I still think it's one of those situations that could have gone either way. The gutshot straight draw ended up giving him two more outs than I thought he would have had if he was holding a 10.

How can UTG be your first hand.

And how can the dealer be that dumb

It's Vegas and you don't have to post to come in. Nice try though.

I can see the dealer's point of view.
It's quite possible that my opponent already had a flush and I would need to go runner-runner to a full house or quads to win (very slim chances) and I put 3/4 of my buy-in into that type of hand.
It was my very first hand, and how could I possibly have an accurate read on a player who I didn't even see play one hand ever in my entire life. I turned out to be correct on my read, but that was probably just lucky, and even turning out to be correct put me into a coin flip situation. If I were wrong on my read I could have almost been drawing dead.

Then I misread your post, sorry. It sounded to me like he told you to fold after knowing he had only 12 outs.

After the hand was played he did say to me, "You didn't have the odds." I'm pretty sure I did have the odds, but I could also see the argument in not putting 3/4 of your buy-in into your first hand when you could practically be drawing dead. If I don't make that call, I keep the $90, I don't have to rebuy, I still have $145 in front of me and I would have finished the session up over $200 instead of only up $100. On the other hand, if my hand held up, I could have had a $500 day...
I'm still on the fence. If it's a bad call, I've made much worse bad calls.
