This isn't necessarily bad. It lowers variance. In limit tournaments I believe you lose virtually nothing by sitting out the first level, since it's impossible to double up.

I have read threads by people who are good at limit saying you should start out playing like a maniac in limit and take some gambles to build up a big stack and apply pressure on others before you are forced to pick a hand and go with it. I'll try dig up the links.

That's if you fold all hands until then. Not showing up is different entirely. The not showing up is what is idiocy and arrogance.

Meh, at this point he has made enough that he could have a "screw it" attitude and still be fine.

Yeah, but that's no way to be legendary. His record will end up sticking at some point soon and never go up. Someone will break that record soon enough, and then what? He fades into poker history.
If I were him, I'd strive to be legendary. I'd try to build a record that people try to beat, but just can't seem to. It's possible NOW to do it. In the next 30 years, though, it's going to be very difficult to win enough bracelets to beat a record that he could set right now.

chan, helmuth, brunson. Most of there braclet wins come from when the game only had like 200 people in the whole tournament. They are good no doubt but just because they won 8/10 of those braclets when the field was 1,000 or less doesn't mean they are the best.

Hellmuth's bracelets mostly come from playing every Hold 'Em game in the WSoP, and right now, there are a lot. At least 30 this year, IIRC.
I mean, come on. Are you seriously going to tell me that that's really a good test of Hellmuth's poker ability, with as few people entering some of those as they did?
No, see, Hellmuth sucks. He enters a ton of HE tourneys and manages to win a few. That the WSoP is now almost completely focused on HE only makes it worse.
