I'm reading Victoria Coren's book, 'For Richer, For Poorer', which I think assumes a certain knowledge of poker.
On writing about tournament poker, she says on page 132 that DevilFish had two runner-up spots, winning $167,035 in one and $193,800 in another. My question is, are those prizes the value of chips on the table or a quite separate prize?
If the prize in a big tournament is $1,000,000, what happens to the value of chips on the table? Are they part of the prize?

Tournaments aren't cash. You buy in for say $1,000 and then the prize monies are divided up amoung those that "cash." You could have any amount of starting chips you want 1,000-1,000,000, etc. each player.
If 10 people play, typically 3 get cash, so like $5,000 1st, $3,000 2nd, $2,000 3rd. More people, more cash spots, typical is 10%-20% paid cash spots.
