    Default Newbie asking for advice

    Hi all,
After browsing this site I bit the bullet and joined.
I've played poker with some buddies as a social kinda game, but now I want to be more serious with the game
The advice I'm after is what bankroll would be good to start with?
At the moment I'm reading through 'Harrington on Hold'em' which is a great book by the way.
I've played in tournaments mainly, winning some and losing some.
Does anyone recommend any good literature sites to read through?

    Thanks for any help given.
    Tom

Harrington on holdem is a great tournament starter, I read volume I & II all in one week and it made my head hurt. Many players also recommend "No Limit Hold'em: Theory and Practice"

Your bankroll requirements are going to be based on what stakes you are playing, if you get into the higher stakes you may need more money to withstand variance
    - 20 Buyins for Cash tables and "Sit and Go's" (1-2 Table tournaments), maybe a few extra for shorthanded ring games.
    - 100 Buyins for Headsup and Multi Table Tournament play (Variance is really bad in those games.

You might want to google "ICM" and study up on it if you plan on playing tournaments a lot.

-On work computer right now, I'll get some links together when I get home.

i read helmuth's book and I can tell you there is nothing really special in there that you can't find with a quick google search.

I think that goes for a lot of things.

best tip i can give you now is just to stay patient while you hit the learning curve (sometimes hard) and do so with good bankroll management so you don't dig yourself too deep of a hole early on

    goodluck

    Thanks everone.
Well I've been doing wuite well in the sit n go's that i play in, only lost 1 out of the 12 i've played.

Going to be watched tonight in a tourney by my brother to see if I have any bad habits (he usually ends up in the final tably in every tourney he plays).

I've nearly finished the 1st book on Dan Harrigton so I'll have ot get the 2nd one ordered.

Harrington's books are by far the best ever. In terms of BR management, virtually all players play too large for their BR. Chris Ferguson used the following guidelines in his 0-$10,000 Challenge, and they work for me.

2% of BR for buy-in to cash games and MTT
5% of BR for buy-in to SNG

    man
    I also recommend search engines
    its a vital game
and there is so much good knowledge and insights just out there for free
but still don’t get distracted and if you find a system or a stile that you like try to research it to the full

Read some books and start playing slow - 1 table only so you can watch everything that happens on the table ! If you have any more question, I`ll be glad to help you.

Books to acquire (my personal list):

    - Super System (Doyle Brunson, the first book is the award-winning one)
    - Harrington on Hold'Em 1, 2 and 3, Dan Harrington
    - Theory of Poker, David Sklansky
    - Phil Gordon's Little Black/Blue/Green Books (Box Set available)
    - Small Stakes Hold'em - winning big with expert play (Ed Miller, David Sklansky and Mason Mallmuth)
    - Hold'Em Wisdom for all Players (Daniel Negreanu)
    - Every Hand Revealed (Gus Hansen)

    HOWEVER!!!:
    http://www.thepokerbank.com/

BY FAR the best site I've seen as of yet. The information just sits there, for free. No profile or activation or anything required.
