Hi guys,
Im very new to poker and have been playing over the last few months with some friends. I recently bought my own table and a 500 set of chips so that my friend doest always have to host the games.
Im interested to know what the recommended amount of chips is to give every player? we usually play with about 6 people ad the buy in is usually only around £10/$10.
I have numbered chips in the following denominations
100 x 10
100 x 25
100 x 50
100 x 100
50 x 500
50 x 1000
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Cheers.

How many chips?

Tournament play I assume. I like to give out 100 big blinds worth of chips. You don't have a lot of 10's to spread around, so using them would make things awkward as you would be trading chips back and forth to pay the blinds all the time. So just leave them out and go with 25/50 to start.
I like to give people 80-100 Big Blinds at the start, it gives people a nice stack to start with and makes them feel comfortable making some plays early tournament.
Chips 35 Value (4750)
10 x 25 (250)
10 x 50 (500)
10 x 100 (1000)
4 x 500 (2000)
1 x 1000 (1000)
You should have enough chips for 10 players, not sure if you do rebuys but this would have you covered for a few. People are usually satisfied with 35 chips, but if you have fewer players you could hand out the extra 25/50/100's.
You might want a decently quick blinds schedule, as you don't want the game dragging forever into the night. People might grumble as blinds might go up often, but it's necessary since you start out with a good number of chips.Last edited by KnightofNarg; 02-16-2011 at 05:27 AM.

1500-2500 is standard. Base blinds on that. 25/50 good starting blinds.
My friends and I play 5,000 starting chips. Usually lasts about 4 hours $25 buyin.
Edit ninja'd with a better response lolLast edited by Jarr3tt88; 02-16-2011 at 05:28 AM.

What is the definition of tournament play?
We basically have around 6 - 10 of us and have a buy in cut off point. Usually about an hour or two after we start.
I have a really good app on my ipad that manages all the blind changes ect and gives you audio indications of when they go up.
Really appreciate the advice guys.

You buy-in for a specified amount, you get a set amount of chips. You play until one person has all the chips, and people get rewarded a % of the prize pool based upon their place.

Ok, I see..
Do you allow people to buy back in during a tournament?

Yes ,in re-buy tournaments you can pay the buy-in fee again and get another starting stack of chips. Usually re-buy lasts for a couple blind levels, you don't want it going on too long or the game will drag out.
I usually allow re-buys in my tournaments, you don't want someone going all-in AA vs KK preflop and having nothing to do the next 3 hours while everyone else plays. That's just mean!
Tournaments I think are better for home games than cash is. I've had some bad experiences with cash games. People taking chips from the case (Basically stealing), people swiping chips from others, people stealing from the cash box, people bringing in similar chips (Basically stealing again), or even just miscounting a stack when you give it to a player can result in disaster. It's usually up to the host to make up the difference or else you'll have some pretty upset friends.
Tournaments, you have money in an envelope set to the side, payout when the tournament is over. Just make sure everyone pays their buy-ins and re-buys. If someone miscounts starting chips or makes a mistake coloring up (which happens) it isn't really such a big deal in tournaments, most of the time you may not even notice.

Wrote this littel spread sheet years ago to help setup a home tourny. All it does it tell you how many of each chip a player gets. Only change the blue boxes.
Marm is back, maybe. Been off for 3 years. Rusty as Hell.
