Hey all. I'm new to online poker..have played poker for fun but new to all this.
Just started playing online a week ago. Have put $50 total in my account, been as high as $120, but now down to just $5. Just looking for some advice as where to start? I've only done 3-4 sit and go $2 tourneys on poker stars in which I placed well enough to get my money back in 2 but thats about it. Won and lost most of my money at the $1 BB .50 SB tables...is this to high/low to start off at?
Should I start at tables? Or stick to these smaller tourneys? Any advice is appreciated on how you got started or what you think I should do.

New to the game, where to start?

If you want not to go broke to variance too often then 2000bbs for NL tables (20 full buyins) and 40 buyins for 9mans is a sensible start.

It all depends on what kind of games you want to play. Do you like tournaments? Single table? Multi table?
Do you prefer cash games? 6 handed? Full ring?
Find what you are good at, and then we can help answer your bankroll management questions easier. 22Fish is pretty much spot on if you weren't a beginner. You'll probably be a losing player for a little while, which is very normal. Thus, you might want to double what 22Fish suggested for the time being. Consider it an education expense and study hard.
I started off playing single table sit and goes. A break even to slightly winning strategy is pretty easy to master as long as you have patience and can follow a few basic rules. I didn't get into cash games for almost 2 years since I was doing so well at sit and goes. SNG's are still my bread and butter today, but I find cash games much more interesting.

Start off Easy ...?
How about starting off at Pacific poker (or luckyacepoker), at the 3/6c no limit tables and moving up, there's lot's of action and the overall level is, well, .. very low
Plus there's a nice signup bonus of 125%

Personally, I'd try and beat each limit before I move up. So spend a little while at the lowest limit.
I know not everyone want's to do this semi-pro and make money doing this though, so really having 3 buyins, you're just going broke in a couple days and rakeguards suggestion will make sure you have enough buyins to learn the game until you are a consistency winning player at your chosen limit.
It's all a spectrum.
