i'm sure this was asked a million times, so please don't flame me for not knowing where to look. Googled and found this forum 5 minutes ago.
My claim to fame was winning $2k a few years back in 3 tournaments...2 $5 tournaments and 1 $10 tournament in a 24 hour period. It was the only time I have ever taken a day off of work when I wasn't sick. Well worth it.
Now that I'm between jobs, I want to make another crack at poker. I realize the best thing is to just not log in, find a job, and maybe play again once things clear up. But it is a game I do enjoy.
I recently deposited $40 into a site. Before I had okay success at playing $1 1 table (9 seat) sit an go turbos. The profit margin in that isn't the greatest, but I don't mind making a couple bucks at the start doing something I love.
But, how do I know when to go up to a higher level? And, if I fail at that leve, how do I know when to go back to the lower level?
What ends up killing my bankrolls is when I start getting cocky and playing over my head and I just end up playing poorly. So this time around I want to make an honest stab and progressing thru the levels naturally and not pushing anything.
If this question was asked many times, can someone link a threat I can look at? I'm sorry if it was.

You need to learn some Bank Roll Management. The usual standard for BRM is:
20 buyins for NL Hold'em.
300 big blinds for Limit Hold'em.
40 buyins for SnG Tournaments.
Keep in mind these are not very conservative numbers. I prefer 40 Buyins for NLH and at least 60 buyins for SNGS, I actually prefer around 80. If you are capable of re-depositing with ease it might be beneficial to attempt to jump the early limits quickly.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Yeah, if you're doing turbo 9-man sit-n-gos, move up a level when you have 50 buy ins for the next level and back down if you hit 40.

Sorry for bumping my own old thread. I think 40 per level is a good goal. And that helps keep me on track and not play over my level because of a few good wins.
Is there a way to know if I should play regular speed (not turbo) 6 handed, or multi tables? What about just regular size tournaments? As I said a few years back I made some decent money playing in $5 and $10 tourmanets in a 24 hour period, but I don't want to rely on that. Should I try a long tournament once every couple days or should I just stick with 9 handed sit and gos?

Playing some tournaments could be useful because you can get bored of playing sng-s if you play a lot. I think you should play guaranteed tournaments and only freezouts.(The best thing if you could play overlay poker tournaments)
