Default SNGs or Cash Games for starting out?

I am priming myself to open a money account (either at Pokerstars or Cake Poker) and I was wondering if there is an advantage in playing a SNG vs a Cash Game? I started out playing SNGs (9 or 10 player tables) and pretty well, then I read that cash games are where you can make your money.

    1. Another question, I've read many references to 6 player tables, is it better to pick tables with at least 6 players or less than 6 players?

    2. Also, I read Brokerstar mention Head's Up SNG (HUSNG) a lot and he says that that is a good way to build a bankroll. I was wondering why some say a 6 player table is good and then I hear head's up is good? Seems contradicting.

    Thanks for the advice.

Heads up is good because fish see it as 50-50 chances of winning. Any style is good if you're good at it, though. Don't just choose SnGs or cash games. Play both and see what you like better. I, for instance, always play 2 cash game tables and a heads-up sit-n-go. It's all personal preference. You'll find fish everywhere at the micro stakes.

If you are doing well in sng stay there and build a roll.

I started out playing sit n go's and than when I had a big enough role for 10nl I switched to that because I wanted to work on post flop play.

Proper SNG strategy involves ICM and push your edges preflop, whereas cash game takes your preflop strategy and adds additional betting streets.

I prefer HU to 6 max and cant stand full ring. But I like the action. HU has a the most variance though so you need a bigger roll and need to be able to deal well with tilt. Just understand that full ring plays differently than 6 max and differently than HU whether it is cash or a sng.

to answer question one, If you are going to play a 6 max table try to get tables that have atleast 5 people. Especially if you are just learning the nuances to 6 max. Table selection is also key, I pick tables that have a high avg pot and alot of players to the flop with only one or two people on the wait list.

question two, Cash vs sng's, full ring vs 6 max vs HU. Both game types and the different number of max players have their good and bad. The key is to find what works best for you and the only person that can do that is you

I was wondering why such an emphasis on Head's Up playing, but I guess in SNGs, you need to have that part of your game on, otherwise you'll never come in first. I am assuming that you can still get money for second or possibly third if there is enough people involved.

6 max is all about position and aggression. Heads up is more playing the player and hacking/exploting their weakness

6 max sng pay top 2, 9 & 10 max sng pay top 3, 18 man sng pay top 4, etc..

I love 6 person sng's but that's my preferance..At the lower stakes people tend to go nuts and shoot themselves between the eyes in the first couple of rounds..I can't tell you how many times I've played just 4 or 5 hands and found myself heads up. Players get better as you move up. Cash games are good but at the mirco level it can be a blood bath..it's tough to bluff because trying to get a poor player off a hand is tough..just play your premium hands and don't call any all in bets without the nuts....I've found the mega sites have more players and that means more fish..FullTilt, Pokerstars, UB..I play on Doylesroom which is smaller and has a huge European crowd and they are pretty good and very aggessive..althoght I've had some success on FT as well...good luck and go very slow at first...JM
