    Default software

    Hi guys,

    Great forum.

I'd like to start using some poker software, to get some statistics, manage odds, etc., since I've read they were really helpful.

I'm basically a fish, having played online at PokerStars for a few weeks and having read some online articles, so I have no idea where to begin. Here's what I want to know:

    1. Is additional software really helpful in general?
    2. Is additional software useful for noobs?
    3. Is there any good free software out there?
    4. What is the best software that can be obtained by using some marketing code at one of the online rooms?
    5. In general, what's my checklist of things I should do before starting to play?

Thanks a bunch for your time!

    T.

I'm a mid stakes NL pro.

    1. Yes/no. A database is essential, other things vary person to person. Personally, I don't use a HUD or anything. I do use BetPotScript because I play on stars.
    2. Nothing that would make you a winner.
    3. There's an open source database if you don't want to pony up for HEM or PT3. Search for it.
    4. Holdem Manager (HEM) is free if you sign up at a site through them.
    5. Don't play tired, distracted, hungry. Don't surf the web or chat while you play.

The bigger things than software are going to be posting in the forums (both helping an asking for help), and visiting learning sites.

Here is my take on your questions......
    1. Yes. It helps you track your game and others.
    2. Yes. If you learn how to interpret what the numbers mean.
    3. I don't know about free but I use Poker Tracker and it has improved my game.
    4. No clue on this one. I only play at Poker Stars and I have not searched for anything there.
    5. Be in a good mood, have plenty of time set asside to play, set yourself a goal for the session. (e.g. I want to play for 5 hours, make $5 or whatever, or lose $5). When you make your goal, your done with that session.

That is one of the best tips I've read.
