My poker knowledge is limited pretty much to hold em, but in the movies you always see the situation where a chip leader bets a crazy amount more than anyone has, and instead of just being able to go all in they have to take off their watch and throw it in the pot or something to that effect.
is there actually a scenario where this would happen in any type of poker?
if so, couldn't the chip leader just buy pretty much every pot

No, this does not go on!
You can only win what you have in chips when the hand starts.

it could be done maybe in a home game between friends or maybe in some sketchy illegal underground game, but not at a casino
