when someone says that a player is x/y what does that mean?
For example "Button was 19/14 over a small sample"
I am sure this is something obvious but couldn't find it anywhere
Thanks

his vpip volume put in pot is x...like <20 is a tight player
<21- >25 can be a tricky guy
and usually anything +30 is the person you want on your right
the 2nd number is pre flop raise
the lower the preflop raise # is the tighter they are, so 14 is a pretty tight guy
you can look on pokerstove to see what 14% of the hands are...as again the higher the number the bigger the donk

The above answer is pretty much there but I disagree with the PFR statement and I think OP may not even know what software we mean.
So first of all these players are using tracking software like poker tracker or Holdem manager (google them) which keeps detailed infomation on every hand that you and your opponents play.
So this info can be displayed in what's known as a HUD (heads up display) and essentially what you get are a load of numbers that when you know what to look for, you can analyse to help in your decision making.
One thing I would disagree on with the quote above is that PFR (pre flop raise) is indicative of how loose or tight a player is. The statistic VPIP (which is usually the first that people refer to is the measure of how tight a player may or may not be as this gives you the number of hands that they play.
The stat PFR simply tells you the volume of hands that that player raises with.
So for example if a player is a 40/6/0.8 then he plays 40% of his hands (which is way too much) whilst only raising with 6% (which means that when he raises, he probably has a huge hand). So although his PFR% is low, he is still a very loose player.
That last stat at the end would commonly be a players AF (aggression factor) but you can set your HUD up how ever you like.
Hope that helps.

Do you online players have any idea how freaking lucky you are to have a fancy program that tracks this stuff for you?
Seriously!
How does anyone play online without a poker tracker? You're 3 steps behind any opponent who has one. That's pretty sick really.

Not really, they don't tell you that someone tanks when they're value betting and bets quickly when bluffing; or that that guy really likes spades or that the other guy will always bet the turn with a draw...

Thanks for the answers and clarifications guys, makes alot more sense now ( for a minute there I was trying to figure out how the hell you guys were keeping track of these numbers on people in your heads, or if you were manually entering every hand into some kind of software, didnt realize there was software out there to scrape the poker client software an generate the numbers for you)... looks like I have some software to buy.
On the topic of software (now that I am looking into it) most of them seem to be holdem specific (or ocassionally omaha). Does anyone konw of any tracking/HUD software that handles multiple game formats (holdem, omaha[H/L], studd, draw, razz, 2-7, ...) I like to mix it up a bit (lately I seem to be playing alot of horse and 8game tourneys)...
Also is any of the software smart enough to keep seperate track of tourny vs cash games? or is this typically handled by multiple hand databases or multiple profiles or something like that ....
Thanks
