I have been playing poker online for a week now. I play games which have a very small stake 0,25/50 or 50/1. I have been able to hold my own and haven't lost or won. I play very tightly. I use the instructions in Lee Jones book Winning low limit holdem. A few nights in a row now i have noticed that many times it takes a very a long time to get dealt a starting hand thats worth playing (according to the book), then when I finally get a good starting hand, the hand doesn't get any of the flop and i toss it. Then i see people that play almost any hands collecting huge pots. I just wonder can you really win low limit holdem with only skill? I mean i dont think i am a very skillful player but i would say that i am better than most players at the tables I play.

I'll start off by saying that I'm new to the game as well and my advice isn't probably that wise. Though, I played a few limit games when I began and I quickly switched to no limit. I find that in the low limit games players will call down to the river with almost any two cards to see if they'll hit TP or anything. When I play no limit I can atleast raise enough preflop with premium hands to get the shitty hands out before the flop and then go from there. That's my 2 cents.

just keep playing and keep learning basically.
it's possible to simply play the top hands and profit but it is very boring and a very slow profit.
but you're right, it is usually advised to beginners to play somewhere between 15%-20% of your hands. some say about 10%. and it takes a while, but you need to get used to folding, because you will fold most of the time, even after you learn more about the game.
Also you need ignore the people that are winning with garbage, get this in your head right now or you will be all downhill from here. I guarantee those crazy players aren't winning in the long run. Poker is a long run game. it's not about that one pot. it's about winning over time.
One of the biggest mistakes I made when I was just starting was that I never raised unless I had AA, KK, AK, or QQ. So i dont know if this applies to you, but make sure that you're raising when you hit those good hands. In general you should raise preflop on most (not necessarily all) of the hands that you play (if no one has raised before you, and even then if you've got something strong such as AQs or better, you can throw in a 3bet [re-raise]). This may sound like you're just gambling more of your money, but what this does is A. scares away people from entering the pot, increasing your odds of winning it. B. gets more money in the pot for the times that you do hit something and C. establishes your image as someone who aggressively plays good hands.
Also, pay lots of attention to your opponents. If theres a guys who's calling any bets to the river with bottom pair or worse, make a note about it and get into some pots with him trying to hit something against him. If theres a guy who has been raising preflop every single hand, re raise him and get into some pots with him. things like that.
you can definitely win with "only skill". i think skill at reading opponents and tight aggressive play makes you profit pretty quickly in low limits, and low limits probably has much less variance than high limitsLast edited by theonejanitor; 09-11-2008 at 09:45 PM.

I ran across this post while browsing and have a question. I am also one of those newbie players who only plays premium hands. In terms of BlackJack, I only play hands that equal 20 or 21. My problem comes after the flop. I play $1/$2 no limit at my local casino with a $100 buy in (maximum allowed) If I raise to $15 to push out the weaker hands and get called, I freeze when I catch nothing on the flop. If 3 5 7 comes on the flop and I have KJ, I don't know if I should check or bet. If I check, what should I do if the caller bets? If I bet, what should I do if the caller calls again and I again catch nothing on the turn?
For this reason I normally just limp in with KJ (or at most make a $6 call) and if I catch nothing on the flop I simply fold.

A good place to start is this:
if you've raised preflop, you should often make a smallish bet again regardless of what you're holding to either take down the pot or at the very least see where you are in the hand, one thing you need to realize is that nobody flops anything good in no limit holdem. usually, at least lol. Don't be afraid to put chips in the middle. you can't win every pot. sometimes you'll raise only to find that you're beat. but you have to be aggressive. never let up the pressure.
Also, you probably shouldn't raise KJ preflop anyway unless you're in position. and if you're in position you get to see what everyone else is doing which makes your decision easier, like if theres a raise and re-reraise in front of you, obviously you're folding. but if it checks around to you, i'd bet if i raised preflop. also you don't raise preflop to make everyone fold. You raise preflop, primarily to win more money when you hit a hand. so $6-$8 dollars is a better preflop raise if you're the first raiser.
Most importantly though, pay attention to your opponent's tendencies. What kind of hands do they bet/raise/call? then you'll have a better idea of what to do.

yes you can win based on skill. i'm a nl specialist, but many of my friends play limit and they make plenty of money. in the long run you'll eventually win if you are more skilled than your opponents. the question is are you more skilled than your opponents. if you are then don't worry about short term results and start worrying if the results don't change 3 months from now.

Yes I agree with what's been said. we all start off with premium hands and play them for their face value but even at NL100 there are players (regulars) out there that will catch onto that and not pay you or out play you (with the help of something like poker tracker).
But once you get comfortable just being at the table playing your style then you add some more moves in. So firstly spend your time whilst you are waiting for a hand, watching the other players at the table and take notes, in case you missed it, TAKE NOTES! Watch and see, are players happy to get it in on the flop with a weak top pair hand? Will they pay pot size bets to chase a flush or straight draw? if they miss said draw, do they jam/bluff the river? when a player calls a raise pre flop, will he lead (donk bet) the flop? if so, will he fold that donk bet to a raise from the original raiser?
Note taking really helped me when I only played 1 or 2 tables and was getting bored waiting for hands, but when I got the hands, I was better able to cope with situations. Also remember that your pretty hands like AK, AQ, KQ etc WILL miss the flop around 70% of the time so you cant only bet when you hit.
Once you have mastered note taking and playing your big hands, next tackle position, I would go out on a limb here and say that position is more important that the cards to a certain extent. in fact I probably make, no I do make more money with 10J on the button than AK under the gun. You should play very tight out of the blinds and in early position, but when you get to the cut off and button, you can play a wider range of hands because (if you have been note taking too) you will act last and have more infomation on your opponents.
Lastly do you ever limp in? If you are playing NL100 6max, I will say that there is never, ever, a good reason to limp in, I challenge anyone to tell me otherwise! I see so many new players limp in with hands like suited connectors or low pocket pairs, do not do it!!!
Think about it, if you raise a hand like 44 you give yourself more ways to win, you get lots of folds and less callers, you can win the pot there and then, you can get one caller with a hand like KQ and when the flop comes 2 7 T you fire a c bet and he folds. But if you limp in, KQ raises, you call to try and hit a set, the flop comes 69J you check he bets and you fold. You will both miss more often than you hit, so by taking the lead pre flop you will win more pots post flop.
Anyway there is so much more to learn but you have to take it one step at a time, I hope some of this helps. Also if you are new to Online poker, get some rakeback, that is the biggest leak in most new players games.
