hi!
i just recently got into poker (and am absolutely fascinated by the math side of the whole thing). previously, i've played poker and usually end up breaking even or losing money.
but lately (!), i've been reading more about it and tried playing online. to my surprise, i can sit down and triple my chips fairly consistently. (i play 10/20 on pokerstars)
if i wanted to translate this into real money, what would be everyone's suggestion?
or does online poker not translate to playing poker at the casinos at all (i notice play money causes people to be extremely call/raise happy).

Well I woulds start with just $50 and play a mix of Cash tables and tournies. Search the forums for stuff on bankroll management... Remember it should be your goal to only deposit once... except when you move rooms online. This will give you a good poker style over time. Play micro limits to start.

Play money is good for learning the basics.
I would say deposit $50 on PokerStars to play NL2 ($0.01/$0.02). 25 buy-ins is a decent bankroll and will get you through any downswings you may have. You sound keen to learn so reading some posts, articles and books etc should get you good enough to beat that level. Post lots of hands in our forums so we can rip your play to shreds (we're not that harsh, honestly, and it will make you a better player).
The good thing about a $50 deposit on Stars is the 100% bonus so just by breaking even you can hit $100 and move to NL5.

Deposit $10k on pokerstars then PM for my nickname so we can play heads up
Seriously though, I would recommend playing some low limit Sit N Go's to get some experience, and it also teaches you how to 'change gears' for if you want to move on to MTT's at a later date, so you know how to play tight early and as you progress pick spots to double up etc etc

lol OneEyedjack, this is the same attitude i had when i first got into daytrading stock. The cost of gaining experience is always losing some money at the beginning but hopefully to still have enough left over for teh time that I have finally gotten through my learning curve.

Online's all about the math. If that's your thing, stick with it.
