I am a beginner but I have reached a level where I can easily profit in play money SNG up to 2000 + entry fee (18-90 entrants on pokerstars or fulltilt). I don't bother entering tournaments higher than this because I couldn't get the bankroll for it together unless I was to spend a great deal of time on a play money cash table ( which I refuse to do anymore - too maniac) or of course if I raised the money over a very long period playing SNG but I don't want to.
My question is - how great a step would it be for me to to transfer to $5 real money SNG? What is the extent of the superiority of play for this over PM SNG?
Any tips for this transition?
(Forgive me - I'm very tight with my money and don't want to expend any more than I have to)

Being someone who has recently done this, the difference is fucking HUGE. Just about everything you've learned in play money probably will hurt you more than anything.
If i were you I deposit 40 dollars on PS and just grind the micro tables and itd teach you and be cheap.iif u raise my raise one more ****ing time i will come over there and slit ur throat

Definitely start on Stars. Depositing only $5 and hoping to build a roll takes a lot of luck. You will most likely lose that money and keep putting in more and more. I don't know what kind of low stakes SnG's stars has, but starting out you want to have about 60 buyins to make sure you don't lose your starting role. Also, make sure that the rake on those isn't too high. Anything more than 15% of the buyin is too high...it's too hard to beat a game that you pay that much for.
The difference between play money and real money is quite different, though I tried a play money SnG for the donk of it last month and was surprised at the patience people had. Regardless, start off slow and make sure the money is low enough that you don't care about losing it. Post some hands and have the forum give you some pointers.
Good luck.Well over $300,000 free every month in 2011 with freerolls, rake races, and rake chases!
www.RakeGuard.com has the highest rakeback percentages available.
RakeGuard...more than just rakeback.

Don't practice poker at playmoney.
Read books, watch poker on TV, play with friends, whatever. Just don't practice at play money.
As young said, the difference is fucking huge. It will probably fuck you up more than anything.

play money sng and real money sng (5$ for this conversation), trust my words, the difference is ..... FUCKING HUGE...
HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE
I've went from a 1000 playchips on stars, got 5 million play chips playing EXCLUSIVELY sng.
Real money, I made a small profit. When I say the difference is huge, it is huge.

I learned alot playing sit n go play money. Was playing quite a few everyday and got to the point where I was basically cleaning up most of the time. Got my play money bankroll over 10mil and actually had someone buy 5mil off me at $10 a mil lol. I've been playing on that ever since.
About that same time Pokerroom put $10 in my account cause I had not played there for a long time. Turned that into around $400 playing sit n gos.
But yeah there probably is a little difference. Just have to adjust accordingly.

Big difference, I agree... the thing I noticed about the transition was that I got way too tight in the beginning because all of a sudden it was real money and not make believe play chips. Just try to play your best, and take those risks when they are appropriate. You'll be fine.

Awesome. Some instructive and interesting responses, thanks alot.
My experience of this site so far had been great except for one question thread about how to play premium hands pre flop that some fuckass removed from the general poker forum because...? Maybe it was too newb maybe it was inappropriate. I felt rather humilated but if someone had sent me a message explaining why it was removed I would have felt ok.

Oh.
well I'm pretty sure that when I looked to see (definitely in that forum) if there was any replys, that it wasn't there. I double checked. Maybe it was a problem on my end.
I'm a dumbass.
