UTG is the position immediate LEFT to the big blind.
UTG is always first to act before the flop.

one thing i don't really understand about UTG is why so much stigma is attached to it. after all, the position is only first to act PF. that's a small handicap but not a -huge- handicap, right?
once you get into the board, the blinds are the ones with terrible position and UTG in 6-handed or less tables doesn't seem that terrible to me.
but like i say, i'm not sure i understand this well...

Well, pots are very often raised in 6-handed games so the player UTG will very often be the one that has to act first on every street. In fact, it's pretty much never a good idea to limp UTG.

If you are UTG then you are acting when there are several other players yet to act. Say you have AJ, is that a hand worth raising? If you are on the button and everyone so far has folded then heck yes AJ has a huge chance of being better than the two remaining hands (small blind and big blind) but if you have AJ UTG in a full table then there are 8 other players yet to act and there's a much greater chance that one of them will have a better hand in which case you could be in big trouble.
Also, if you are going to bluff (raise the big blind with a bad hand) then it's much better to do it in late position than UTG because again there are several players yet to act and there's a greater chance that one of those remaining players has a big hand and who will call or raise your bluff rather than fold.
As a clarification UTG is immediately left of the big blind and is first to act preflop; however, after the flop the small blind is first to act (if he/she is still in the hand).

thank you, peoples.
Well, pots are very often raised in 6-handed games so the player UTG will very often be the one that has to act first on every street.
so pots are raised 6-handed in the average ring game because players don't feel the need to wait for better hands as with eight and 9-tables... therefore they play more aggressive PF?
In fact, it's pretty much never a good idea to limp UTG.
okay... i see what you mean, otherwise you have to bleed too many BB's in 'raisy' PF tables.

UTG 9-handed is the shit-spot you read about in books.
UTG 6-handed is middle position, in terns of preflop hand selection. You have 5 people left to act, you have 5 left to act.
