Flush draw vs straight draw
Hi, Ive been playing poker for about 2 years now and have always wondered why flushs were ranked higher than straights.
Flush draw
I mean this is where im coming from lets say i had 2 clubs for my hole cards and the flop comes 2clubs and a blank. That means we only need 1 more card to complete our flush leaving 9 cards left(assuming no1 else is holding one.)
straight draw
You have 4,5 for hole cards. flop comes 3,6,blank. That means we need 1 card to complete our straight leaving 8 cards(assuming no1 else is holding one)
so isnt 9outs better than 8 and better chance of making a flush? Or we factoring the chance of players having clubs in 1/4 into this? But that would mean we hit our flush easier since its 25% of the deck is a club and we have 2 streets to hit it.

You're looking at this the wrong way. Poker is played with 5 cards, not 2. Starting with 0 cards, being dealt 5 (or 7) random cards, you are more likely to get a straight than a flush.

In order to hit your flush...you need the same suit, obv. For example, if you're chasing a heart draw, only the 8 of hearts will help you. But if you're drawing to the straight, any of the 8's can help you, and so on and so forth.
There are more cards that can help you.

given two random cards, its harder to flop a flush draw than a straight draw. So while you will hit your flush draw more often than your straight draw, you won't see as many flush draws. This is if you saw every flop with every hand you're dealt though.
I won't go through the math because I'm lazy fuck.

thank your very much weaktight that answered my whole question. I didnt think of the flop a flush draw than a straight draw. But the flush has a better chance of hitting.

I am w/ the OP never thaught about it and figure straits are harder to make. I also read 0 of the posts in this thread besides, OP, so I still don't know why.

-Im not asking what a flush is... or maybe you just read the title of flush draw vs straight draw and actually didnt read my thread? (dont wanna call you dumb but your pretty much did to assume I dont know what a flush is.)

-yes, thats why im comparing flush draws(9outs) to straight draws(8outs)... You seemed more confused than I am(dont wanna call you dumb). Thanks for proving most people havnt even thought about this though.

Pokerpker11, you are confused because you are only considering post-flop odds, which don't represent the true probability of hitting a straight.
Let's say you are heads-up, for example, you have 5h 6h, pre-flop. And assume your opponent doesn't have any of the required cards.
There are 11 other hearts in the deck and you need to hit 3 of them to make your flush.
What about straight possibilities?
2-3-4-5-6
3-4-5-6-7
4-5-6-7-8
5-6-7-8-9
6-7-8-9-10
The above are all possible straights you could make from the board, and there are 4 2s in the deck, 4 3s, 4 4s, and so on. You could also find the board makes a straight. There are more possibilities for you.

You can also look at it this way - you flop a straight much more often than a flush. You only take into account the postflop board but you must consider the complete probabilities starting preflop to showdown!
