Which books?
Hey
Ok im going away for 2 weeks and to pass the time im going to be studying limit texas holdem page by page.
Now i deffinatly definatly definalty dont want to run out of stuff to read on my 2 week break (hell would ensue ) so im putting together an amazon order an am asking for some advice if you would be so kind:
1. "Super system" hmm maybe need some advice is it good for limit holdem, and which is best 1 or 2 or are they different(maybe best left till later??)?
2. Should i get "lee jones winning low limit holdem" to go with my order?? Is it more indepth that ssh? is it worth it with ssh?
3. phil helmuths play like the pros? is this any good?
4. theory of poker (is this too advanced for a relative beginner, even after reading beginner books or will it round off my understanding of the game?)
5. And you guessed it Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players now despite the connotations of the title, should i still get the book for again a better understanding or should i leave it till later?
6. Is Hold 'Em Poker worth bothering with?
Im definalty getting:
1.Getting started in holdem
2.Small stakes holdem
3.Dennis purdys illustrated guide (cmon humour me it got a good review here)
Cheers Guys :good:

I only have SS2 right now
SS2 is a good all-round book, covering all poker games. If you're crazy about poker, you'll want this book at some point. Haven't read the limit chapter though so I can't comment on how good that is, in particular.

books
Hey Tom, well being a relatively new player myself (bout 1 year) the books I have/think helped me were:
Lee Jones - winning low limit holdem - I found this to be very easy to read/understand and I think it provides a very solid base for becoming a good beginner poker player...with these "a-b-c's" of low limit poker playing you should do very well against 99% of poker players, who like you and I are in the beginner category.
D. Sklansky - Theory of Poker - almost finished this one, also very good, it has more advanced reading/theory than LJ's but it provides more specific info on game theory and situations. Can't say I can totally remember/understand all concepts in it, but after all I am still a beginner...
Haven't read the other one's you mentioned, I did get Caro's book of poker tells, it's pretty good, obviously more leaning towards live play - some stuff out of date (especially the pics!) but all in all I think it's a great book...
good luck reading

Getting Started in Hold em & SSH are definate "musts" if you're planning on playing LHE and you're new to it.
SSH is about 300+ pages and has quite a bit of info in it to study. I don't know how fast you read and retain info but SSH can be read a few times over IMO. It's kind of "technical" at certain points so it may take a while to digest the info. I still go through certain points farily regularly.
Play like the Pro's I haven't read but some people here have had some good to say about it. I know Beav has said some good things about it.
HPFAP is a good read but if you're just getting started you already have several hundred pages to study. IMO worth having but have a fairly good grasp of the game first.
SSH IMO is one of the best books for learning LHE after you have a good understaing of the basics.

I hope you mean SS2. The original super system, holdem was still played with Antes. if you are talking the original SS, don't waste your time, if you are talking SS2, I don't think you will miss much by skipping it, but you should not read it 1st 2nd or 3rd - the chapters on Stud 8 or better, Omaha 8 and better, and 2-7 triple draw low ball are good though - not a bad book to have around.
2. Should i get "lee jones winning low limit holdem" to go with my order?? Is it more indepth that ssh? is it worth it with ssh? SSH actually assumes you have read a book like WLLH. The WLLH approach is probably better for newer players. SSH is more of an "expert" book.May be good to read this before SSH, after Getting Started in Holdem.
3. phil helmuths play like the pros? is this any good?
Excellent sections on limit MTTs, Omaha and Stud. The holdem stuff is pretty pedestrian. But if you want to play some games other than holdem, this book is a great intro to them and a good companion with SS2. You can usually find this book in the library.
4. theory of poker (is this too advanced for a relative beginner, even after reading beginner books or will it round off my understanding of the game?)
Put this off, the key concepts are explained better in SSH (you can read the gambling cocepts section of SSH early - it is great)
5. And you guessed it Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players now despite the connotations of the title, should i still get the book for again a better understanding or should i leave it till later?
Never read it, hold off on it.
6. Is Hold 'Em Poker worth bothering with?
Don't need it, with GSIH, SSH, and HPFAP I think this book may be obsolete.
Im definalty getting:
1.Getting started in holdem - good pick
2.Small stakes holdem - good pick

Isn't hellmuths book for cash game limit? I guess it can apply to limit MTT.
the best part of hellmuth's book is thet non texas holdem sections (mainly O8b). the O8b gave my a nice foundation interms of starting hands.
theory of poker I currently have in my posession. This is a great book. I think all beginners should read it.

I'd stick with GSIH and SSH, if you want a third, get PPLP, it'll wet your appetite for other games.
