You pretty much got it. And if you don't understand how important that really is right now, you will.
Say there's 4 people to a flop and you flop middle pair. The people in the hand are the two blinds, someone in early position, and you, whose on the button. Say you hold A9s and the flop came 4 9 Q rainbow.
Say it's a decent little pot that you want because on the hand earlier you lost some chips to a rivered 2 pair.
Everyone checks around to you. Now that you've seen that everyone has a relatively weak holding (occassionally you'll get check-raised here but you can drop it) you can now make a 1/2 - 3/4 pot raise and be confident knowing you can probably take it down.
If you were the one in the BB and caught mid. pair, you'd check it because someone behind you could have a Q as people lover overcards. I'd bet mid pair every time on a flop like that though, but that's just me, I'm pretty loose.
But you see the importance, right?
