Limit or No limit
Hey
Ive been playing limit texas hold'em for a little while now but before i really go into it i want to specialise in one form of the game..
So my questions is:
Is no limit better as in later on make more money or indeed now make more money than playing limit?
Is limit considered more for newbs?
Please advise me
Thanks Alot

Limit isn't considered to be for newbs, some very experienced players on her plait it almost exclusively...and as their source of income.....I'm not one of them but I do play a lot of limit.
Here's my .02 I love limit more for cash games, and NL for tournaments. Plus if you're just getting started there's a ton more reading material out there for limit players than NL. Also it depends on how you can handle swings in money chances are you'll have bigger ones in NL because you can loose/win you're whole stack at any time.
There's money to be made in both games, just a matter of what you prefer and are more comfortable with.

I like them both too. I started out in limit cash games and built my bankroll up that way. There can still be huge swings in limit and don't fall prey to the assumption that you can't loose much money quickly in limit. Cap the last two streets of betting with the 2nd nuts and you can loose a buy-in pretty quickly.lol For me, limit is a math game. Do I have to odds to call for this draw or that draw etc. It's also much harder to bluff someone off of a pot when they have a hand. I've always played NL tournaments and enjoyed them alot. I started playing NL live in B&M casinos and that sort of opened the door to me playing more online NL cash games.
I would never say that limit is a newbie game because many of the big NL tournament pros greatly prefer limit cash games and that is often their best game. One thing that is difficult for some people (me included sometimes) is switching gears mentally when changing between limit and no limit. They have the same name and are played pretty much the same but for all practical purposes, are very different games.
So to answer your question, you need to play both games for very small stakes or even play money and find out which one you like the best and which one you are the best at. At first I was definatly a much better limit player than a NL cash game player because I was not able to allow myself to even semi-bluff or make continuation bets in NL. I was bascially playing scared. Once I got over that and saw how semi-bluffs, continuation bets, and betting draws was profitable in NL, I started making more money and enjoying the game more. Which one is right for you? Only you will know after you've played both.
Good luck!!

Me, I'm a limit ring player, and a NL tourney player...although I have taken a break from NL while I work up my roll in limit.

cash no limit games were dead for years until the recent poker boom
most of the high stakes games around are a mixture of many different limit games, and PLO.
limit has been the bread and butter game in the US, I think PL is the game in most of Europe.
it has only been the last few years you could walk iinto a card room and expect to see a NL game (for the most part).

Personally i find that swings are actually greater in limit than nl. I also think that there are far more skills involved in nl than limit, even more so in live play.

cheers
hmm thanks alot for the advice im undecided then, i thought they're may be a clear preferance of the majority.
Is there not generally one of them in which people make more money generally?
I thought that no limit is more strategic and limit is more maths (as was confirmed here) So what do most of the big players such as helmuth, brunson and phil ivey prefer to play.
Which do you think has better long term prospects, to continue into the future etc
Why is the wsop no limit if limit is more popular generally, that seems strange
Cheers Guys helpfull as always

The "big names" only play NLHE in tournaments. Read CardPlayer online at http://www.cardplayer.com

It's a personal style choice.
Nothing else.
Don't let anybody ever tell you that one game is better than the other. You need to play them all, get competent in them all, before making a choice. There are equal amounts of maths, and equal amounts of strategy in both games, but they are just applied differently.
I have no problem playing NL, I just prefer Limit. It's all personal preference.

The reason why the "big names" play limit is because big money games would:
A.) Die fast as fish go broke fast.
B.) Keep fish away from the game.
Not to mention that one game gets boring and doesn't level the playing field and brings fish from a lot of games into games. The method of a bookie is not to blast someone. You gotta bleed him slowly. Yeah, the vig has to do with this, but more importantly, it gives the gambler the illusion that he can win.
