Default Where'd I go wrong?

Was quite looking forward to tonight. I don't get to go out to casino's or get a few rounds in with the fella's anymore, so figured i'd try my hand at online poker. If I don't break even on dry land, I usually end up coming away with more than I came in ....probably why my friend's don't play anymore.

Did my research and done all sorts of reading up towards the differences between online and 'land' gaming, where to start, how the general 'type' of player changes at different times of the day, etc.. signed up to party poker (where I got the impression 'fresh meat' played during certain hours), played a few play-money rounds just to get used to the layout, and deposited £50 ($92) into the account.

I played for a good 6 hours (with a break inbetween of course) 5:19am at the mo'. Slightly overdone it I think.

During this though, I watched my cuddly wad of cash in the .5/1 rooms very, very slowly dribble down into nothing.

..any advice as to where I went wrong?

I played tight, watched the players for tell-tail habbits, folded like I was rearranging my cupboard, didn't chase stupid hands, kept it sensible yet still random enough to lead people on or keep them guessing, played in just one room then multiple rooms while just waiting for greater hands, watched rooms for a while before deciding to join, and ....I just got screwed. I could barely break even. It was just a constant struggle from start to end, like I was still wet behind the ears and sat in front of a few dozen pro's.

So yeah. Tips? something I missed? a shoulder to cry on?

Well for starters if you were only gonna deposit $92 you should not be playing .50-1. Was this limit or NL? Either way you are way underrolled. You could simply chock this up to a bad day. losing $92 at limit in one session is normal, and REALLY normal at NL. Also we have no real way of telling if you were doing anything wrong with your play since you didnt post any hand histories. Post a few and we can evaluate them. Be prepared for brutal honesty though.

P.S. PartyPoker is rigged so you may have lost because your not on "THE LIST" yet.

I'm gonna be honest with you. Don't confuse my honesty with being mean.

1.) You wanna know what went wrong, yet you're telling all of the good things that you did. Do you see the first problem?

2.) Party Poker auto-imports your hand history onto your C: Drive. Go through them and pick out losing hands and copy and paste those hand histories in the Strategy forum.

3.) Read the Poker Strategy Forum stickies before posting.

4.) Losing sessions happen a lot in quantity. Poker is a numbers game and nothing happens in perfect frequency whether it's how often Albert Pujols gets on base or how often you catch your flushes. Things happen in what seem to be bunches and "even out" to the numbers you read and hear with a minute margin of error, the larger your sample becomes.

5.) What games were you playing? You were probably playing games that you couldn't afford.

it seems like you were approaching this as if your playing w/ compitant players ie: "watched the players for tell-tail habbits", "kept it sensible yet still random enough to lead people on or keep them guessing" etc... whne you play on site like party, your dealing with dumbasses. just play your cards. raise good hands. fold bad ones. chase when you have odds.

secondly: playing .5/1 w/ a 92$ roll is fairly dumb (unless you plan to depo regularly)

3rdly; i can respect a man who plays till 5am. props on that

Alex, Party only stores them on your hdd if you set that option.

You say this was a one time, or at least the first time for you... Then playing with $92 is ok. (see the disposable/replacable income thread in the newbie FAQ for a better view on this). You don't seem to be a hardcore player, looking to have some fun. Thats ok, play underolled, You don't plan on rebuying, so the rest of bank isn't at risk.

Poker should be a fun game. This game isn't fun for the casual players without the fear of losing, and you just can't get that if you are used to a 5/10 live game and are noe playiing .10/.20 online....

Now, If you plan on playing online regularly, then go through our newbie FAQ (it goes from the ultra simple to some pretty deep topics) to get a handle on what you should be doing as regular (Online or Live) player.

Also, as alex said, Post up some HH's if you have them, or try to recreate them from memory. If you ask support nicely, and maybe in Indian (ask alex for help with the translation, J/K!!!!), they will send you the histories by email.

Sorry, talking about the 50 cent/1 dollar limit games. Yeah, I've read around that it's wise to aim around having the equivelent of 300 big bets per limit for your roll, but I figured i'd give it a shot, and that was the smallest tables they had. Didn't want to splash $300 on a first visit.

Also see your point The Alex. Good idea with the logs. Might get round to that later or just compare them to others I can find. Otherwise I guess I was just hoping for some missing element that I hadn't thought of or explained.

And yeah. 5am. It was one of those moments where you glance at the clock, produce a face of disbelief then (in this case) say "one more hand."

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Guess i'll just brush up, stick to basics and do a little reading around here...

edit: ....oh yeah ...and Party Poker rigged? List? Sarcastic conspiracy theory joke or genuine warning?

I will save you a little trouble and tell you to deposit on a different site if you dont want to deposit for a full .50-1 BR. Go with like PokerStars or something that offers micro-limit games. I played .15-.30 limit on a PokerRoom site called PowerPlayer. I now play 10NL on that same site. To make your money worth your time, or to at least get enough hands in to see if you are a + or - EV player you should play like .5-.10 limit for a while. You should really post some hand histories for us to evaluate. Post hands where you thought for sure you did the right thing and still lost. Those are the best. Also any hands where you simply were at a loss for what to do at a given moment.

As for the PartyPoker thing...if I say anymore I may be silenced...

The HH are auotmatically saved in C://ProgramFiles/Party Gaming/Party Poker/Hand Histories.

I did wonder if the guy was Indian with that moniker. Hey, another desi in the crew.
