Its pretty simple, you play low hands with strong straight and flush potential, or with an ace.

Avoid playing high hands and high drawing hands.

There is not always a low hand that qualifies.

The best high hand always takes half, even if its ace high.

I suggest you go play for playmoney at an online site and you'll figure it out soon enough.

so basically there are only 2 ways in hi low to win the entire pot

1.ur 7 cards can be used to make the highest and lowest hand
2.neither of 2 qualify as a low hand and the high hand takes it all

That is not what he said.

There are two different games Stud hi/low which does always have a low but is almost never played, Stud 8 or better - which is sometimes in called hi low. In S8b, there is not always a qualifying low hand, and in that case the high hand takes the whole pot.

that doesnt make any sense...hi/low is the same game as 8 or better in 7 card stud

so y are u saying there is ALWAYS a low in high low but is usually never played then u say there is not always a low in 8 or better
