Default When does the kicker not matter?

I was just playing online and a situation came up that I didn't understand. What is the rules to the following example:

Community Cards: 4,4,J,7,8
Player 1: 4, 9
Player 2: 4, 10

Who should win the hand? Also, when does the (higher) kicker not matter?

Thanks
Ben.

Well you see, in holdem you make the best 5 card hand.

In that hand, player 1 has 444J9
while player 2 has 444JT and should win.

The kicker doesnt matter in hands such as this one :

Player one has T5
Player two has T3

Board is 67892
Both players have 6789T and split with a straight.

Another example would be

P1 has 34
P2 has 35

Board is 33AK7

Both players hold 333AK and split.

Hope that clears things up.

Hi everyone,

Yes I was in a heads up game with my uncle, we ended up spliting the pot in this situation can you tell me if this was correct.

Player 1 AJ
Player 2 KK

board shows 8 9 T J Q

As mention we ended up split the pot, but who should have won. Intially I said he would have one because I was looking at the 'A kicker' but my husband said no that it was a tie because in this case the hold cards would not come into play since we both had the same thing per the board. thanks

Actually, while the "A kicker" does not matter, player 2's K would be the winner. Player 1 would have a straight, 8 to Queen, and player 2 would have a 9 to King straight.
