An oxymoron. I should have said beneficial practice. I was looking for something better than party tables without spending money yet.
Thanks for the advice to play micro stakes, that was good - I won a few, lost a few more but more importantly I now have some hand histories to study.
I have found a happy medium though. I look for the play tables with 3-5 players and not-so-loose players so there aren't 5-person showdowns and my starting hand strategies aren't diluted by calling stations.

Everest Poker I found was was good for me starting out online. They have microstake games with the max buy-in set at 2$ for the no-limit. Both 10 and 6 seat tables.

sit down at a 5-10NL cash game, and play.
you will confuse the hell out of the pros and inevitably win alot of money.I get more ass than a toilet seat. All shapes/colors/sizes.
