Hi all, been reading the forums for a few weeks and thought I'd post for some advice...
I'm going to try the challenge of creating a bankroll from nothing, but it's a long slow struggle to gather chips via the conventional manner on PS. I've read a few books, namely HoH 1 and 2, and am familiar with all the Sklanksy concepts, however none of it seems to apply at all to trying to "win" these play chips. I've been playing 3 tables at once, 5/10 NLHE
I seem to be struggling for the following reasons...
1. PF raising is 100% pointless. I simply can't invoke anyone to fold, any sized raise simply acts as a pot sweetener as everyone just comes along for the ride and then adds 1k more play chips to do it again. Even if I do hold a premium hand, it's no longer premium by the river when there's usually 5 others in the hand with me.
2. Manipulating pot odds. It simply doesn't work since a. they dont understand and b. chase anything at any cost.
3. You can't push at all... there's just nothing at risk for the fools
4. Bluffing only works for pots that have been checked to the river and only then arent worth winning. Large pots can't be bluffed at either since there's either too many people or its just worth a look to call
There doesnt seem to be any approach that works. It's pointless playing tight pf because I always enter the pot with 5 or 6 opponents regardless, playing loose gives you even worse odds since you end up playing bingo with the fish.
After the flop if I play passive I give "free" cards, if i play aggressive they still chase, even without anything to chase.
It seems nearly impossible to set up any +EV plays since no matter what hand you hold if you're in the pot against 5 others then at best it's less than a coinflip, basically making any play equal EV.
I'm not even concerned about table image since there isn't anyone that possesses enough intelligence to cotton on, even if you do play a sort of premium hands, seeing the flop say 20% of the time it's hard to get any sort of read. Low rainbow flops or any time the board pairs screams danger because it means some fool has made a full house or a set almost guaranteed.
The only way that seems to work is to play as passively and cheaply as possible till I get the nuts and then go all in and hope for a dopey caller, but it's just too tedious and bad for my game in the long term. I play free live poker once a week , $11 tournaments and occasionally $11 sngs or $10 home games.
Has anyone got any tips to earn play chips as quickly as possibly, preferably in a dignified or ethical way as opposed to using two accounts, going all in with 1k, tripling up transferring and repeating?
Cheers all, great forums, thanks in advance.

Ive tried this before.
Dont even bother. Its almost impossible...You could have AA go all in and everyone will calll you and you lose to like trip 2's or something...your best bet is to buy like 100k poker playchips..i know you said you wanted to start from scratch but theres no way you can grind up without taking alot of time and luck. I grinded up 1000 to 500k but that was just pure luck.

Poker is about adjusting to your opponents. I sometimes play in $400NL games where half the table can't lay down any hand ever. What do I do?
Sit and wait for the nuts (or top pair) and don't bluff.

Nice i'm doing the same thing, i started last week. What I did was grind it up playing SNG. First i started with the 300, then 2000, 10,000, then finally the 50,000. It took 2 days to get to 500,000. Sold those for $5. And now i'm up to $30 play $1 SNGs.
It's not that hard just play super tight and pop them on the river. Yah i really suggest the SNG because you can win a lot more and they are way more fun than 5/10 or the 100/200.

I thought of doing that but after around a week i got so fed up with the type of donks described earlier i gave up. Plus i honestly feel that you learn a sloppy game playing with those idiots and start seeing A-rag etc as a decent hand.

Do what DueceJ said.
I've got 350k sitting in my account that I made playing the SNGs.
You could also try getting into the weekly round 2 for $1000. You have to finish 27th or better in the holdem and omaha freerolls and 24th or better in stud freerolls to get into it.Last edited by Maf1889; 02-04-2007 at 12:51 PM.

Cheers, I think you're right about the SnGs, even if I have to play tight as hell and just get in the money. I seem to be able to beat the 310+20s easy, the 2000s are a little bit harder and tighter, haven't had a go at the 10ks as such. I only started playin stars for play chips because the play seemed tighter in the ring games but I was horribly wrong.
I actually did start by playing the SnGs but it seemed too slow, maybe once I progress to the 10ks it'll be ok.
Thanks for the advice all, even if it was what I suspected. I'll let you all know if I managed to get 500k and grind that $5 into something a little more substantial
