When someone else calls you you have to show. If you call them and they win, then you can muck.

Showdowns are in the order of the betting. Muck losing hand means that the better hand's already been shown and you don't have to option to show without the chance to win the pot.

Basically the entire rule is this...
The last person to bet or raise on the river MUST show his hand. Then it goes around the table to everyone else still in. If their hand is better, they must show, if it isn't, they are given an option to muck or show.

If the river is checked down, then the first player (from the small blind) shows and then it goes around the table in the same way as above.

and of course you can usually check the hand history anyway to see what folk mucked!
