$1K Stimulus

Top pro, Steve Sung captured his first WSOP bracelet by outlasting 6,000 other players in Event #4 at the WSOP. The massive field was the largest non-main Event field in WSOP history.

This could be a breakout win for Sung who had two WPT final tables in 2008. Sung previously had $1.5 million in career earnings, but no major wins to his credit. Well, there is no disputing that this was a major win: Huge field, $771,000, and a WSOP bracelet!

$1,500 PLO

In event #5, $1,500 PLO, Jason Mercier beat out over 800 runners to capture his 1st WSOP bracelet, and $237,000. Mercier has over $2.7 million in career earnings, and is one of the best poker players you have never heard of. Mercier has been crushing the European Poker Tour; with wins in San Remo and London, and a final table appearance in Barcelona.

Definitely a player to watch at this year’s WSOP.

$10K 7 Stud Championship

Event #6, the 7 Card Stud World Championship saw 142 of the best Stud players in the world battle it out for the $373,000 1st prize. In the end it was Freddie Ellis who captured the title, beating some of poker’s biggest names.

In what amounted to a murder’s row of poker talent, the final 10 players included Eric Drache (a long-time 7 Stud specialist), Max Pescatori, Hasan Habib, Greg ‘FBT’ Mueller, Tim Phan, Jeff Lisandro, and Daniel Negreanu.

The $1,500 NLHE tournament is down to 59 players (from 2,791) with Steve Karp in the lead. No big names left in this tournament, so it would appear that the streak of 1st time bracelet winners will continue (Events 2 & 3 saw repeat winners; Events 4-6 saw 1st timers).
