I was wondering about this, too. In live limit play, I have no problem consistently beating games from $2/$4 on up to $6/$12. So, when my online bankroll swelled after winning a couple of tournaments, I took the opportunity to move up in stakes because (1) I felt ready to play in better games from a skill standpoint and (2) my bankroll could now accommodate it.
I've only played 3 or 4 sessions of $2/$4 online, but I'm getting crushed at this level. It doesn't seem to me like the players are that much better, but it's definitely a different game than $2/$4 live. For one thing, it's rare for more than 2 or 3 people to see a flop, so the pots are not all that large. As a result, I'm finding it very difficult to make up for mistakes that I make in pots that I lose. In the live low-stakes games, there's a lot of dead money in each pot, and so dragging in only one big pot helps to make up for a lot.
I'm working on analyzing from PT stats from these games so that I can figure out how to beat $2/$4 online game. All I know is that I imagine this online game is a lot like what I could expect to find at a $10/$20 or $20/$40 table in a casino. So the online experience has definitely tempered my desire to move up in the live stakes games I play even though I have likewise built up a bankroll large enough to accommodate those stakes as well.
