I guess that makes us entitled to being cheap bastards.

I am, in fact im tipping 200-500% of what my normal tip would be.
I shouldn't have to defend my actions when I tip on something I'm paying for. I'd be much more likely to give a bigger tip after winning a large pot, then winning the jackpot.

$5 on a 100 pot? That's insane, even playing 2/4.

I don't know if this helps or not, but my understanding is the winner of a MTT is expected to tip the dealers in the range of 3%. Why should a jackpot winner tip more than double that?

Agreed.
That's why I said $20-25 would be "expected" tip, i.e. the same as 15% on a dinner bill. Even though yes, the house is dropping $1, it is expected that you tip something when you win a jackpot. That is the social expectation, there is no arguing that, but the amount could be argued. I tipped more because I was in a good mood, excited, and half drunk at the time and generally tip well anyway. My wife had also won $430 playing video poker an hour before so I was in the giving mood
In regular pots, my usual tip is $1 a pot, big pot $2. If something really strange happens like I am behind with KK to AA and a king falls on the river I might throw an extra dollar or two and say thanks for the river but that is just having fun. $5 is generous but I do see that occasionally on the strip.
My thoughts on $1-2 total I already stated, sorry if I offended anyone with my delivery. I have seen many tourists that NEVER tip at table games like BJ, craps, etc but tipping is part of the way Vegas works, like it or not. My attitude us that if you don't want to tip play home games or online, just like if you won't tip at a restaurant you shouldn't eat out or if you won't tip the valet then you should self park. Don't play at places with a jackpot if you don't want to tip.
For instance, I won't play in the Alladin's daily tourneys because the house % is too high, but if I did play in them I wouldn't then not tip if I won and justify not tipping because the structure screws you. It isn't the dealer's fault.

top-nazi... realy made me laugh
Honestly, I think you are on both end... I cant see how I can tip almost 10% of the Jackpot and I cant see neither how I can toss under 5$ to the dealer.
That said, I dont know how much I would have toos, but definately not 5$ or 50$!!!

I would like to give a perspective from a dealer/player point of view. As a dealer if I dealt you a jack pot worth $500 and you tossed me a $5 I would thank you and contiue being my usual friendly self. Then when i went to the break room I would tell everyone how I had a cheap bastard on my table who only gave me $5 and they would all agree
But like I said, I am a very friendly dealer and try to talk to all players and get involved most of the time (no one can be friendly and talkative 100%).
When I play I tend be a generous tipper as I know how it is on the other side of the table but I do have a few rules.
No thanks = NO tip. If a dealer is pretty much ignoring everyone, not thanking your or acknowledging you when you tip, I dont care what they give me, I wont tip. You tip for a service and that isnt service.
On the flip side I will allways tip a leaving dealer who I had a fun time with, regardless if I win or lose. If they can entertain me for that 30/60 minute period then they deserve it.
But in the end it is up to you and your particular values. If you are there for a fun time and the dealer is providing you that fun time, then tip them. If your there strictly for the money, then tip the minimum but dont complain if you get the minimum service... remember, YOU ARE TIPPING FOR A SERVICE.
anyway thats my two chips worth. I prefer dealing back in Australia where you are not allowed to tip and they have a nice high hourely wage. In which case I just treat the players how they treat me

hopefully i have reason to tip a lot.

When I win a pot, I tip $1. That is, unless the pot is very small (less than about $7 on 2/4 limit). If the pot is huge (I've won pots close to $100 in 4/8 with 1/2 blinds) I'll up it to 2 or 3 just because I can.
The first live tourney I played in, we chopped the pot. We each won $100 (except the chip leader who took more). I tipped $10 because, well, just because I could.

WTG GRowls!
and on tipping, if a person, in whatever job, if the do excellent work, will recieve a tip, and maybe a larger one if its a tipped job already. I work in a business that gets paid craps wages with lots of responsibility, and I perform almost biblicaly miraculous feats, I bring the dead back to life, and I dont get tipped. Cmon.
If the dealer has been doing a good job, then yeah, hes gonna get a bonus. But If they have been crappy all night, and I can think of a couple regular dealers I know, then I may even stiff them a little to show them what I think. If they catch on later, I definatly make up for it.
