Donkey justification:

Preflop:
I know that UTG has a big pocket pair, but with so many callers (average flop sees 4-6 people) if my little 6-3 hits, I can easily double or triple up.

Flop: I missed and was ready to fold, but I got a free card. Who's the donkey now?

Turn: I hit a flush, but it's so small it's probably no good. The small blind practically jumped out of his seat when the turn hit, but he checked. Button is a very aggressive player and bets with anything here. I have a good read on him and know he's weak with a decent draw, but there is no way I could call right now. SB reraises to $100. UTG (the preflop raiser) ponders for a moment, then angrily throws in his cards exposing 2 red Aces. As the action is folding around to me, I study the SB. He is 65 years old and has poor eyesight so he holds his cards in his hand over his chipstack (not on the table). He is staring at the TV in the background while shuffling his cards. As I'm about to fold, I catch a huge break as one of the SB's cards gets caught briefly on a finger -- just long enough that I can make out a black facecard (I am two seats to his right) No one else notices...

I call time and consider the possible hands my opponents might have:

Button is weak, but he is ready to call another $60. I know he doesn't have a made flush because he would have bet a lot more on the turn to protect a made flush from single ace of diamonds drawing out on him -- a card exposed AFTER his bet). But he could still easily have the King of diamonds, giving him a gutshot straight draw and a diamond draw. And he could just as easily have a set or two pair. Either way, I know I'm ahead but that he has ~20-25% chance of drawing out.

Small Blind is acting very strong, and I initially put him on a high flush. But he accidentally exposed a black facecard, so he can't have a flush. But he could have a straight, set, or two pair -- plus a possible diamond card for a flush draw. Same odds of him drawing out...


I now am 95% sure I am ahead and I push (figuring that if I made a misread on the button and he has a weak flush, I'd get a decent chance of him folding a better hand). I give the small blind a 75% chance of folding (he's a solid player), and the button a 50% chance of folding (he's a gambler who sometimes knows better). I just need to dodge another diamond or the board pairing...


Button calls, SB folds, and I triumpantly flip my cards over. Gasps shoot around the table as people see a "garbage" hand take down the biggest pot of the night...


PS: Small blind says he had a K-10 for a straight (made on the turn)...

Yeah, although in this case it was the UTG player who called me a donkey for calling his $40 preflop bet "when you just knew I had a big pocket pair..." (no shit mister -- ever hear of implied odds?).

So I'm quite happy to be considered a donkey by the folks who over-buy into a 1/2 NL game and rarely cash out for more than they bought in. In reality, I'm generally a tight player so I hope this pot gives me some more action in the next few days...

Probably not worth the trip for you, but it's in Northern California. This game happens every monday; the rest of the week it's just 1/2 NL with $20 min buy in and $200 max. The drop on either game is $3 with a "no flop no drop" policy...

Anyway, I went back for another 4 hours (had to wait 2 hours in order to buyin for less than I cashed out). Once again I bought in for $150, but was pretty card dead. Still, with $1 and $2 blinds I could just fold 2-3 rounds straight and wait for a good hand (or good situation to play a bad hand)... I ended up cashing out for $400. UTG's chipstack went from $4000 when he first bought in to just over $1000. He was tilting pretty good and talking about how great he is (how he plays Phil Ivey online heads up for $100,000) and how this club's dealers always fuck him on the river.

I can't believe you called 20 BB's PF with 36s ( ) and then didn't bet when you made your hand! In fact you only raised because you saw one of your opponents cards?! This is weak

It is a strange setup. Sure the call was for 20bb's, but since the game is $5 to go, it was more akin to an 8bb call on another table... And 3-6 is a damn good hand if you have a decent chipstack to work with... You play it to flop two pair, trips, a straight, or a full house. And on the occasions you do make a monster, it's so well disguised that you'll get paid off tenfold.


I didn't play the 6-3 in hopes of making a flush, I played it in hopes of flopping a straight and getting paid off by the large pocket pair. But since my opponents so carelessly gave me extra information, what else was I to do other than use it to my advantage? Are you saying you don't count cards when you play single deck blackjack?
