I was playing a monster qualifier tourney on PP today and there was an early hand...

I preflopped 99, and the flop was 779. Because it was such an early victory, I checked and called the guy after me, who had simply bet. Turn was a 3.

Whatever the river was, this guy showed pocket 3's so also having a full house, only less than mine. I'd cleared him out with raises and he said, in a friendly manner mind, that I should have bet after the flop and not checked.

I explained i was just tricking, playing dirty I guess to throw them off the scent. Is this a bad thing? I've heard about underplaying your hand being banned in some casinos but surely it's about making money right? poker's about bluffing!

Yeah I mean I knew what I was doing. I knew I had it in the bag. Like I said to him if I'd have bet properly there he probably would've folded his threes and then I don't think there was even anyone else in past the turn.

What you did is called slowplaying, and if done at the right time, is a powerful weapon. Slowplaying is only advised when you have a flop that is a monster for you, but is unlikely to have hit anyone else, AND a free card morethan likely won't beat you, but give someone else a second best hand. Since you flopped the best full house (Only thing to fear is 77 for quads), then you slowplayed correctly. good job.

no man you didnt make a bad play at all..i guarantee being the donk he was would have called if you bet on the flop so it might have been a good idea to take his money on the flop and then him catch up by checking the turn
