i wasn't paying attention to the game @ all (not until the turn @ least). after the hand, i thought to myself, "wait a sec, did i just hit a royal flush?" i had to go back & check the HH. didn't get paid @ all though. what a waste

Board isn't paired, a lower straight flush isn't possible. Unless your opponent has 98s, unfortunately you can't make any money here (except on the flop and preflop as SeanyBullets suggest).
