Default To push ir not to push? - That is the question!

Don't have a hand history so as best I can from memory.
Sit n Go with 10 players left (5 per table)

    UTG - t1250
    Hero - t1680
    Button - t4780
    SB - t4250
    BB - t6280

    Blinds: 100/200

    Hero is dealt

    Pre-Flop action:
    UTG - is All-in

    Hero - ??

OK, here's my delima. I'm down to 5.6M and am looking for a hand to double up on, however with UTG going all-in ahead of me I have lost 'first vigorish' and that small but significant factor. To top it off the next three players all have larger stacks with the BB and chip leader being very aggressive and the most likely to call if he has anything resembling a hand. I don't think the SB and Button will risk calling with anything less than A-Jo or a pocket pair JJ or better. I kept looking at those big stacks and wonder if I can call UTG's all-in and not get re-called from behind giving them a chance to eliminate both small stacks.

I'll give you my decision later but for now I'm looking what others would do or have thoughts on in this situation.

Hell that late in a tourney playing short handed, I have gone all in on pocket 2's before on many occassions. Of course you don't want all the other stacks to call behind you, but chances are that no one else, including the smaller stack, is going to have a better starting hand. I think I would push that personally. Yes I can be put out on that hand, especially if I don't hit a set, but I could also tiple or quadruple up if my hand turns out the best.

    I push.

UTG can be doing this with 98s, given his stack, and since the BB may be willing ot call with crap such as JTs, I am thinking this is a good chance to tripleish up. In fact I'm raising this to get my chips in to try and say "hes mine boys", I'll take this coinflip in hopes to build my stack for a push at the final 5

Push he's going to have overcards most of the time, one overcard some of the time and pocket pairs some bigger and some smaller the rest. On average it's a coin flip, but I'd take it because in a couple of hands you'll be pushing any ace and you've got the blinds as equity if you want to justify it with odds.

You'll win some of these and forget about them immediately as you double up and go on to win, and you'll agonise about the ones where he flips TT and you bust out. I think it's taking "risks" like this at the right time that increase the ROI% in SnGs. Early on or with a bigger stack I'll fold it happily

Villian has 6bb and is UTG. His range is huge. I push it here.

If you don't push here, there is a good chance you will be pushing vs. a full ring later. I say take your chances now with the 9s.

OK - thanks for confirming what I thought I should have done - but didn't! I folded the 9-9 mostly because of the 3 large stacks behind me. Once I folded I regretted it mostly because as ypsieast pointed out, I was going to be at a full 9 player table in a hand or so. In fact, we were all at the final table on the next hand.

UTG didn't get a caller and picked up the blinds - making me even more regretful. On a positive note, I did go on to win the tournament starting with an A-2s that flushed out for me and it was good going the rest of the way.

However, faced with a similar situation in the future, I have resolved to push it all-in and take my chances with the big stacks.

you really, really want to be the one to be 1st to push in this situation.

but its callable, your stack appears to be shrinking and the orignal bettors stack was even smaller (he could even be on a steal) but the problem i see is the stacks behind you, anyone with a decent hand is going to see 2 short stacks go all in, and with a little better than 2-1 to take out 2 players, there are alot of hands that scare you.

if im last to act i might call, b/c im beating a lot of his potential holdings, im a coin flip with the rest, and there are only a few unlikley holdings that have me slaughtered.

but again, i would much rather push this than call. that way, they fold alot of the garbage that is a coin flip, they still might call with hands im 70-30 with like A7 etc. i want to create fold equity. ill only take a coin flip unless im super desperate, i want to at least give them a chance to fold so im winning the pot more than 50% of the time, rather just flipping a coin for my tournament life.
