I'm aware I could have just folded preflop to avoid this but what should I have done after the flop?

Straight + Flush Draw

I try to check this down.... You have a medium flush draw, and a weak (out wise) straight draw. Maybe the flop bet is ok to just see whats going on. I think you got enough equity in the hand to do so, ut lay off the turn... take the hopeful freecard and be done... the caller has to have a made hand, since you can't be worried about any draw haws got except for Kxs
Marm is back, maybe. Been off for 3 years. Rusty as Hell.

On the turn, either make a very large bet, or none at all. You're not betting for value here, so an auto-call with any 2 bet is very counterproductive.
