    Default I Just Dont Understand?

    Alright people

I was wondering if someone might be able to help me out with some advice. I have been reading up on alot of poker and watching it at the same time so i feel i know a little about the game. Unfortunately i have played my mates over the weekend twice and both times i have not come within the money.

They have started playing at the same time as me but dont really read up on the game that much. They just know the basics so im not sure what it is im doing wrong?

Alot of them cant resist in looking at each others cards once the hand has been won by someone which really gives someone’s game away. I feel this is one of the main reasons i dont get to do as well as i can.

Can someone give me some advice on how to improve my game?

If you've only played twice, then the worst player in the group could easily have won them both.

Equally the best player could have come last both times.

Best way to learn is to play lots of hands and keep reading

As to the looking at cards bit, you should lay the ground rules before the game and say that if people want to show their cards they must show everyone and that if they don't no-one can look.

Otherwise it kind of defeats the object of the game.

In the home game I play we always show are cards we are playing 5-10 dollar tournaments and all friends but I don't think it gives a whole lot away if everyone is showing their cards, if it is just one person then ya it will hurt that guy but if everyone is showing just change your style up during the game. check your big hands sometimes bet em strong other times
If there wern't luck involed i guess id win everyone

I meant we played twice this weekend. We have all got together and played before!

I appreciate everyones replies. I seem to have a very aggressive style of play. I think im going to need to fold more hands and play with A10 before i decide to start betting big amounts of chips!

    AT!?

Ìf you invest a lot of money with hands weaker than AT, it may be a reason why you have troubles...

I mean you can play very agressive with position and good reads with any hands, but the way you said it, I feel you do it more often, and in all kinds of situations!

    Am I right?

I know when I first started taking poker seriously, reading everything I could, watching every WPT and WSOP, I actually started to get worse. It's like I was trying to play like a pro when I didn't really have the skills to, making big bluffs at the wrong time, that kind of thing. But I've just kept doing what I was doing, absorbing as much information about the game as I can, and my game has been steadily improving.

You're going to have to lose in order to learn how to win, it's just part of the game. Think of it as poker lessons that can sometimes be pretty expensive.

I just started playing, so my advice is most likely wrong. But, if your friends have adapted to a different style of playing, your style may just be weak against it =D

It sounds like you are playing at a weak table. Meaning your opponents tend to play too many hands, call down big bets and all-ins with mediocre hands, and chase draw (even bad draws).

With players like these you want to tighten up and play straight forward poker. Don't worry so much about outplaying your opponents to win small pots. Fold anything that you feel is a close call as the worst thing you can do is to get yourself in coinflips for all or most of your money. Instead look to get yourself in dominating positions (which will happen often enough because you are playing better cards) and when you do pump up the pot as much as you can.

POSITION POSITION POSITION, Also vs people like this i would recommend wait till you have the absolute nuts to trap. Since they dont respect your raise as much with superior hands, then ill stress patience.
