So I'm flipping through the channels and come up on the 03 wsop. This is a hand that intrigued me. Deeb, Ivey and Fitusi were in it. I know i got some details wrong, so bear with me.
Deeb, short stack with about 210k, raises it to 20k (I'm guessing 2/4k blinds) with![]()
. Fitusi calls with
![]()
and so does ivey with
![]()
.
Flop is![]()
![]()
Deeb checks (this I do and don't like. I guess he's thinking that if he bets, he'll chase the other two off). Fitusi bets about 20k, maybe more. Ivey then puts in a raise. Deeb then pushes for his last 189k. Fitusi folds, and ivey calls, but deeb catches the King to stay alive.
Now, If you are Ivey, do you raise?
In the online events that we play, I don't, I slow play these, try to get fitusi to stay in too. But I think Ivey thought that Deeb would never expect ivey to raise a set there, so Deeb would rule that out as a possible holding for Ivey. Therefore, deeb assumed that Both players were holding, at best, a pair of tens. Discuss.

I raise just like Ivey. If Fitusi wants to donk along let him. I'm certainly not giving 2 players the chance to draw out for cheap. If I keep 2 players in, its MY mistake. If two come for the ride on bad play thats their mistake and if I get drawn on I'll live with it. Add in JTs and now you have another 2.5 outs to lose against. Plus, the raise says to Deeb that there are two underpairs made. I like my hand a bit better than yours Fitusi, but just a little.

Looks like a flop of Ivey could safely slowplay but a re-raise that knocks out one of his 2 opps increases his win odds if he can get heads up. With a flop like this I would be more inclined to slow play but any kind of textured flop, I'm looking to win it on the flop or at least bet away drawing odds. Ivey know Freddy is as likely to trap as not but with a set I'm guessing his not too worried about it.
Deeb was short stacked and I'm guessing he had already decided to check-raise all-in as soon as he saw the flop so long as he got any action at all. He's hoping to get either Fitusi or Ivey to defend and double him up. If both checked the flop thru, Deeb would have come out on the turn with a probe or better bet looking for a bite.

It depends how you play, you'll see aggressive players do this alot. Why? well because they'll raise with alot of hands in this spot and probably get called. I do it myself all the time, people think that if you play a hand fast then you obviously aren't "that" strong.
That's why I advocate playing hands fast, the vast majority of times and would do the same thing here.

I don't raise, but I don't play like Phil Ivey either.
Bruno and Deeb and Ivey know each other. Ivey is very aggressive. If he just calls on this hand, what could he possibly have? By being aggressive it just looks like Phil is trying to steal the pot again. I think his play was structure and opponent based.
Aggressive players get paid off playing their big hands aggressively because they are always aggressive.
I loved Deeb's reaction "I don't like these fucking sevens"

I agree with Beavis. I think it's very difficult to analyze this play by Ivey and say "I would / wouldn't have done that". It's basically comparing apples and oranges because of Ivey's reputation of being an aggressive player who will just try to run over people. (Anyone see how badly he got played back at in the 2005 WSOP once it got down to 27?)
I completely agree that the more aggressive you are, the more people are going to play back at you when you hit a hand if you stay aggressive.
