Default Rebuy Tourneys

What is the best way to play in Rebuy tourneys? I normally play very tight, patient poker and do very well in normal tourneys. I don't seem to do as well in Rebuy tourneys, because when all the crazy players go all in against each other, one of them doubles up, and the other one just buys back in. Should I be more aggressive?

Example Hand:
I had AK with about 1500 chips. I raised it from MP. A 800 stack goes all in. A 4000 stack goes all in, a 1500 stack goes all in. It comes back to me.. and I figure I'm of course against pairs and have far less than 50% chance of winning. In a normal tourney, of course no way do I play this hand. I laid it down, and the players flipped over AQ, AJ, and 99. Surprisingly the AJ won with 4 to a flush. (I would have won with the A of the suit...)

Is that a call I should concider in a rebuy tourney?

AK is probably the fourth best starting hand in hold em but a call is still risky. With three people in front of you, you have to expect at least two face cards from all of them. Even with AK you aren't positive your hand is the best and even if it is, with three others playing already, your chances of winning are good, but still not real great.

I would not have made the call..I would have considered it and then folded it. Anytime 3 others are already committed it's tough to play your cards unless you have KK or AA

The flush was unpredictable. There is no way to predict that. I think you still made the smart call

Dont play rebuys if you dont expect to spent 31$ or more. 51$ should be the average imo, but for most serious players its more. Rebuy at the beggining to start with 3k chips and take the add-on on the break.

What are you describing is an auto call and a dream situation in a rebuy tournament. Most of the times you its a coinflip but you get 4 to 1. If you lose you just rebuy.

By they way rebuys are extremely fun because you play every single hand for one hour and you chase everything. Also they are so easy to make money if you are decent in tournaments. Even with 5k after the break, its easy to survive against the tons of fish that got lucky. I started playinig them 6 days ago and i already have 2 final tables..

I wasnt sure if i was going to play in this one but this post made my mood for it.

Why is AK the fourth best? What about AKs? Is 22 worse? Its a favorite over AK HU.

Putting starting hands into static ranks will KILL your game. Hands strength is ALWAYS relative to the dynamic situation your in. AS has been discussed in many venues on many occasions, even the great and mighty AA may get folded preflop sometimes.

----

Personally, in a rebuy tourny, that I am ready to play, I woiuld easily go all-in with AK preflop. Of course that depends on my chip position and everything, but the intent of the rebuy period is to amass as many chips as possible, and you can't do that by folding AK preflop. Of course, sometimes you can't do that by calling either, but I'd call.

And Vense, what if its a $100 rebuy? $31 is already shot. I prefer to play in $3 rebuys on stars, and $30 is a VERY bad night for me. I know what you meant, but you can't put a price tag on something when we don't know how big his wallet is.

As I said in response to your post on PP, PLay where you're comfortable. Don't play scared, and don't play stupid. Bring enough ammo to keep your guns loaded.

Must be metaphor night, lol.

I agree that you can't make a list and set it in stone and never deviate but its a good idea to know what hands win the most (and hands you are comfortable playing, I love J9 for some reason, I feel good playing it). I also agree that there is a time to fold AA but only in tournaments and even then VERY rarely. Like if there are 5 people all in ahead of you and you are 2 away from the money.

In a rebuy tournament you have to take more risks and accumulate chips faster. There is going to be a TON of chips in the board at the end and to avoid falling behind you need to build up your stack. Don't play in the rebuys unless you are prepared to rebuy at least 3 times. With 3 all ins ahead of me I usually lay down AK but it depends. Since one of the guys had more than twice your chips in that situation it sounds like you were already a little behind. In that case you want to get your $ in where it will do the most good and have a chance to almost quadruple up with Ak sounds pretty good to me. So yeah, I'd call there.

Yeah i meant the 11 rebuys. I still play very tight because i cant take advantage of my chip lead so well and average stack gives me the freedom to make my game but i cant drop my average rebuys less than 5. I have to play every hand and hope to get lucky of course.

10 rebuys is too much, my worst was 8 so far.

How many rebuys did Negreanu make in the WSOP rebuy event? 26? 27?
